EDIT: After the recent patch, the below method is no longer valid. Any information and methods listed may be outdated.

There is currently a little known method of performing a melee attack which allows you to swing your weapon a second time immediately after the first. The method is simply as follows:
  1. Have any weapon in your hand other than your melee weapon
  2. Press and hold your melee key (default F) to begin the melee sequence
  3. Spam left click (while still holding F) to immediately attack again
Warning: You can be shot and killed at any point during this sequence.

*Sometimes, the second swing cannot be seen visually, but you will hear it, and vice-versa.

OK, that's great, but how does this factor into which melee weapon we should choose? Currently, we have 3 classes of melee weapons in the game. They are broken down as follows:
  • Small (low damage, fast swing speed, wide takedown zone): all knives, Bedouin Dagger
  • Medium (medium damage, moderate swing speed, moderate takedown zone): both clubs, Trench Mace, Bartek Bludgeon
  • Large (high damage, slow swing speed, narrow takedown zone): Hatchet, Pickaxe, Shovel, Sawtooth Knife

Medium and large melee weapons can also come with the utility to break wood, wire, and/or damage light vehicles. I've found that the ability to break wire was the most useful of the three, with the ability to break wood coming in second, and only found comical uses for being able to damage vehicles.

Now here is where the numbers come into play. The small melee weapons do 35 damage, the medium do 45, and the large do 55 (the numbers provided in-game are incredibly misleading). That means, if using this trick with any of the large weapons, you are able to take down your enemy from full health with the melee attack, even if you don't hit them in the takedown zone. The small and medium melee weapons still benefit from this method, but ultimately still requires a third swing to kill a full health enemy.

All of this leads me to conclude that the hatchet is the most effective melee weapon for most situations. It deals the most damage in a single blow, its small takedown zone is mitigated by the double-melee mechanic, and it has the ability to break both wire and wood. The only downside appears to be its slow swing speed, but that really only comes into play when trying to melee multiple enemies, which usually isn't the greatest idea. In fact, most of the time, choosing to melee an enemy isn't the safest way to secure a kill, but sometimes you just can't resist .

So with this new information, will you be switching your melee weapon of choice? I personally use the Sawtooth Knife, which shares the same attributes as the hatchet minus the ability to break wood. 6 service stars and counting

I'm using the hatchet. Wish I got the Sawtooth prices, it started giving me the Bartek prices :/ 4/5.

Thanks for the info Buck!

R.I.P. The double-melee mechanic seems to have been patched. Booooooo. Was fun while it lasted.
