New Processor

hey guys i am looking to update the last part of my custom rig here. My computer is all custom now transfrom from an old Dell 4700 to what is it now. Only thing i have to upgrade is the processor i was wondering what kind of processor you guys would recommend for what i alredy have setup here are my specs: On a side note i am probly going to be adding in a 2nd monitor to this setup at a later point if that makes any diffrence.

great buy. though if you're proficient/comfortable with over clocking i've heard stories that the 2.4ghz versions of the dual core over clock without much trouble. my friend reports over clocking his 2.4ghz to a 3.0ghz or slightly greater without any problem at all.

looks like a good buy to me and your motherboard would support it.

Yeah the Core 2 Duo's are really nice. Note that most applications aren't written to take advantage of multi-core processors (or multi-processor systems) so buying a quad core isn't going to do you a whole lot (since they generally have a lower clock rate than the dual cores). I would suggest going for a dual core with a higher clock rate (such as the 3GHz or 3.16GHz already suggested). Don't go with a 2.3GHz quad core or something like that. Otherwise, only Photoshop and a few other programs are really going to take advantage of the the quad core.

Just make sure it works with your board though...I didn't check but apparently pickle did!
 
First off, I don't know whether you want to buy it online or not, but newegg.com is a great site to do so if you haven't bought stuff there already. I would recommend a dual or greater core processor no matter what, nothing much else seems to be selling right now anyways, besides I think your mobo only supports pentium d/extreme and higher anyways. I agree with Rhymonoceros that quad cores aren't the best buy for gaming, there made for multitasking. So, core 2 duo and core 2 extreme is where I think you should look. I have a 2.8 Ghz pentium D which works fine for what I use it for, just gaming. It's a cheaper processor, but works great and cut costs a lot, but if you use yours for more than gaming I think core 2 due and core 2 extreme are what you want.

FYI: Newegg says this is what you can get for processors: Quad-core / Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo / Pentium Extreme / Pentium D
 
ah thanks.. Ah yes i bought all that stuff on this system from neweeg. Ah well i guess i need to more specific on what i am getting the new processor for. I am pretty much getting it in prep for when i get the 2nd monitor and also that my programs will ALT+TAB in and out faster. So i would guess one of the processor mentioned here for multitasking would better suite my wants here but i not sure on that. But thanks for the suggestions looking forward to more :). As for over clocking ah kindof my next step on the custom built computer end. I just built this Build about 7-8 months ago so i am still pretty new but i would be willing to try some overclock on something that has a simple program for it.
 
I would definitely go for the Core 2 Duo or Extreme, then. As for over clocking, I personally don't do it because I haven't had a real need for it yet, I've heard horror stories of it melting your processor but you have to be pretty careless with it to do that. I agree with Rhymonoceros that quad cores really aren't what you need.

Gonna throw my support behind the E8400 too. The Wolfdale is rock solid.
 
Wolfdale for the win.

I'm on a conroe right now oc to 3.2 ghz.

The Wolfdale is very cheap, and will go to 4 easily on stock voltage.
 
For overclockers I would recommend throwing in the freezer 7 pro or better and getting a lot more out of it :P

Posting on this old topic becuase i got the money to buy this processor now. But i had a question. I Looked at the wolfdale and it looks like the best fit for me. MY question is what do i look at to make sure it will be compatible with my mobo? I know a few of you guys said it is. i would just like to know what specs to look for. For my own sakes :). Would hate to buy it then find out it its not compatible

Word of caution, Overclocking in Windows or through a program is NOT recommended.

Gimmie a budget and I'll find you a chip. If you plan on overclocking, set aside some money for an aftermarket heatsink and TIM.

I dunno if anyone mentioned yet since I skimmed... if you plan on getting the wolfdale which you SHOULD it's the pwn, make sure your bios is up to date to support the 45mn processor.


I would suggest doing it before you switch processors since you have a functional system already.
 
ordered and should be here at me house in a few days :). Thanks for clearification on the TIM i know what that is but never heard of it refered to as that. Thanks for all the helps guys. As that last article its pretty mute to my process i am useing probly about 5 year old processor. that i belive only half the cache speed and mhz as any stardard processor does today.

P.S. my processor socket is 775
