Mic Volume Low In Game

I tried that, if the mic boost is on.. no matter where I put the volume, it's messed up. Not only is there a weird fuzz noise constantly, when I did "Test Microphone" it made a screeching noise.
 
My best guess is that your default device for the microphone isn't set to your microphone, ventrilo will pick what it thinks is the microphone, I believe it has a default setting but unlike most applications it allows you to manually choose from a list of devices. Games and the like often choose from what you've chosen as the "default" microphone device, I'd try playing around with sound recorder and control panel until that works.
 
Are you able to record yourself with the microphone outside of ventrilo at all?
 
Yes, it's fine in sound recorder/ventrilo, etc. but when I go in game its quiet. It still works, but others are saying the volume is low.
 
And the setting to boost mic gain in TF2 (forgot about the merge, source games.. lol) doesn't help?
 
I did the mic boost in DoD:S, and it did the same exact thing.. a loud fuzz noise, and then when I did "Test Microphone" there was a high pitched noise.
 
Realtek AC'97 Audio.. not sure if it's the latest driver.

Driver Date: 11/17/2004

Seems kind of outdated. But I've never really dealt with sound drivers before, maybe you could point me to the correct driver download to get.. so I don't mess anything up.
 
ya not 2 mention the fact that u have motherboard sound. hey dude, do yourself a favor & go onto newegg.com & get like a creative audigy card 4 like 20-40 bux & thatll fix ur issue cause ive never trusted motherboard sound for the life of me. at least itll be an investment worth your while since creative has always been the leaders when it comes 2 sound.
 
To be honest, I don't think this has anything to do with my sound card. This headset was only $18 or so, and I think the cheaper ones like this are just quieter.

Regardless of what it is, I really don't have the $ to buy a sound card.. and even if I did, how do I know that would solve this problem?
