Oh Best Buy, have you no shame?!

talked about this on the irc earlier. best buy knows that most of the public is uncertain to what linux is, so they slap a price tag on it and call it the complete edition, which is fancy for the home/server edition bundled up ever so warmly. the fact is is that both the server and home editions are free to download and free to order if you feel like waiting 1-2 weeks. but hey its free and you get nifty stickers. then this really blew my mind. geek squad charges 130 bucks to install it? info provided on youtube, google, etc can help you with that. shame best buy. shame.
 
Choices:

A) Buy Ubuntu for $19.95 at Best Buy

B) Download Ubuntu for free from www.ubuntu.com

C) Request free Ubuntu disk from shipit.ubuntu.com


Hmmm, let me think really hard about this for a second.......
 
wow only 20$ imma order it now... not i got 2 versions of it already dl'ed and google helps alot to install it incase the step by step to installing it isnt enough
 
i can see why they want to do this. but yeah, it's pretty pathetic knowing that best buy is doing this.

There are a lot of people out there that want to try out linux that know nothing about it. They are specifically aiming at people who are too lazy to research what it's like to swap to Linux. I doubt that this will be around for too long.

O_O Really? Thats something else isn't it? I've installed Ubuntu on my laptop for the amazing price of $0 :D Its free on Ubuntu's site! Silly Bestbuy
 
Sick...$20 for packaging and 130 dollars for snot-nosed kid to push it in the drive and tell you its done with the setup.

Why don't you guys get all bent out of shape about it? At least they are offering it. It is a step in the right direction to help spread Linux to a wider audience. Nobody is forcing you to use this method.
 
Is that even legal? They're taking a free product, and making profit off of it? As far as I know, people that put no price tag on an item DO NOT allow people to go out and make a profit on it.

its slimy. its like charging to use a public bathroom. and are you suggesting the best way to spread the word is to slap a price tag on it?
 
WOW! the real funny thing is that none of the reviews say nothing about it being free online. Silly No0bs.
 
I'm not overly surprised. During the previous summer semester I decided to take a part time job at BB, and I can assure you that this incident is almost meaningless in comparison to their business practices. They train their employees to identify customers who are ignorant and essentially take advantage of it.

They also try to profile everyone that comes into the store, assigning you a "class" based on your incoming, age, and gender. (Each class has a specific name, as well as a basic psychological profile on how to sell more product to the consumer.) When an employee categorizes you, they will try and go down a list of additional products or services (warranty plans) in an attempt to make a larger sale. I could go into more detailed description, but that could take awhile.

Best Buy encourages their employees to inform customers that they're not commission based, but they routinely discipline or terminate employees that cannot sell more then one product to each customer.
 
the only reason i go to best buy is because they have a large selection of video games, movies, and audio cd's....

buying computer hardware at best buy is like buying a car from a buy-here pay-here lot..

it might look appealing at first, but once you get home and take a look at the paperwork, they just screwed you for 200-300% profit.
