that actually seems like a pretty simple project. Kinda cool too. Not practical at all but cool.
And splicing isn't too hard. A Friend of mine spliced 2 x-box network cables together when we were in high school, in about 30 minutes, on a whim. search on google if you're interested. Seems daunting but it's really not so bad honestly.
