Computer keeps dieing..

Anyways, maybe 2 days ago I restarted my computer to find out that my speedfan's file giveio.sys died.. so i had to reformat my harddrive and reinstall everything.. (only took 3-4 hours)

anyways, had it working great last nite until i started to mess with some wincustomize stuff... and next thing you know I DL a virus called dl.exe.. which pretty much is a mailspammer and eats away internet connection.. well I forgot to install my anti-virus stuff so i had to reformat again (sob) so today I reformatted and installed everything perfect (SP1 drivers etc..)

anyways, the virus was still there "dl.exe" somehow or someway.. so i looked online to find the remedy to this.. and I solved the issue, so when i went to restart my computer to "finalize the battle". My computer now has a BSOD at startup (before windows logo screen)

so now, im stuck here on my lappy while watching CHKDSK /p /r do its job..

if anyone has a suggestion to help solve this issue, it would be great!

oh also, this all started when i upgraded my ram from 1.2 gigs to 2.5 gigs..

when you format a disk, you don't delete all the information. in fact, you don't delete any of it. you delete all the indexing pointers, leaving all your information orphaned yet still on your disk. your virus dl.exe installed itself in a rather unimportant place where it could still access your WINDOWS directory (not, like most viruses, in your WINDOWS directory). had it been there, reinstalling windows would have overwritten it. but since it's obviously not there but still accesses it (and accessed it while you installed windows), you won't be able to get rid of it easily. formatting your disk will not solve it. here's what I would do:

extract your hard drive from your laptop and plug it in as the slave (secondary) drive on a desktop. the desktop will not boot from it. if there's any information still on it (you likely won't be able to access any since you formatted), back it up now. download an emergency disk zero utility and run it ON YOUR SLAVE DRIVE. MAKE SURE YOU USE IT ON THE RIGHT ONE!! this will convert every single bit on your hard drive to a 0, eliminating any remnants of data left on it. put the drive back in your laptop and reinstall windows. the virus will be gone.

that depends how he formatted it, if he used a program designed to wipe a disk, it may have written over it hundreds of times, and therefore its impossible to retrieve the data.

but yeah, i use data recovery tools all the time to make sure my nephews arent downloading pronz,
that sht is annoying coming home to 5000 open I.e. pages with "YOU HAVE WON!" and "enlarge your E-penis today!"

Endiment has a good solution though.. if that doesnt work you could always try my favorite method.
Smash it with a large hammer a MINIMUM of 3 times. (it wont work, but its gonna be fun!)
