I am building a new bare bones kit in school for my I.T. degree (A+ Class) and I was wondering if this is ok. If I had a choice to spend more money I would but I got to pick this for under 200$. I will still need to buy a monitor, mouse and keyboard. What do you think?

1.)Power Up Black ATX Mid-Tower Case with Front USB, Audio Ports and 450-Watt Power Supply.
2.)Asus M2N-MX SE Plus Motherboard - NVIDIA GeForce 6100, Socket AM2, ATX, Audio, Video, PCI Express, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, USB 2.0, Serial ATA, RAID.
3.)AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+2.66GHz OC OEM Processor ADO4400IAA5DO.
4.)2 Crucial 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 Memory. [Upgradeable to 4Gb.]
5.)Nvidia 8600 Gt Oc 512mb DDR2.
6.)Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB Hard Drive.
7.)Sony DRU190A 20X DVD Rewritable Drive.
8.)Windows XP Pro(64 Bit) I hate Vista and I think XP will run faster on this rig.

my only suggestion would be bail on the 64bit version of XP...if you're going to go 64 bit, I hate to say this, but get Vista. It runs MUCH better than XP's 64 bit version, and the slight performance loss you would see in games running Vista will get made up in the extra memory it can handle.

XP 64 is not really supported for drivers and a lot of software, so more and more you will find that it takes a LOT of extra tweaking to get things running smoothly. So, either pick up XP 32 bit (my suggestion), or if you REALLY want 64 bit functionality, go with Vista.
 
may want to go with a smaller hard drive and spend a bit more money on the ram. I know it's barebones but 4200 is ancient isn't it?
 
Yeah if I were you I would opt for a 250 or 320 gb HDD and goto PC2 6400 standard memory. The speed difference on memory is insane between those two levels, just make sure your mobo supports such ram before you buy it. If you can't do that, then get the lowest CAS reading 4200 RAM that you can, as it will bring you as close as possible to a decent speed. Again, it's a barebones kit, so that might not matter for you, but in my experience, faster RAM = better performance no matter what the tasks, and is worth the money/sacrifice.
 
I changed two things.
A raptor 150gb Hd and 4Gb of pc6400 ram. It will only work at a lower speed but its more ram
for the system. I just hope vista 32bit can handle it. If not then I will need to drop in 2Gb insted.
 
I get to keep it. So I might use it for something around the house. Even if its just another computer on my network. Or maybe a server. I am not sure yet. I know I can run games on it. Its not a bad computer. But I also know its far from the greatest. But I will do something with it.
