fewer soldiers around?

Ive noticed that pyro has become the default class for most people moving away from soldier. The thing ive noticed more of or less of actually, are less and less people using the "burn and run" strategy with pyros. They seem to be content with the suicide rush tactic. That being said I HATE turning the corner out of 2fort and bumping into someone and killing myself with a rocket. I personally dont mind the influx of more pyros as in time it will all balance out with updates for each class. Just my thoughts.

Heh, the funny thing for me is I'm now doing the opposite. I used to be the type of player that played a kamikaze pyro. To me, that was sort of how I saw the class designed. Go in, cause havoc, and give your team time to build up. I used to do this all the time on Goldrush. Run in that tunnel, set everyone on fire, and it gave the engineers time to get sentries up.

Since the patch, however, I'm taking a much more conservative approach. With backburner, rather than just running in, I'm looking for openings so I can ambush. A couple nights ago, I was on Gravelpit, and there was a group of players preparing at the hall that faces the final point. They were being distracted by the people on the point, so I ran in the side entrance, came in behind them, and killed all 7 of them. :D For me, Pyro class has really become a lot more fun due to things like that. Now there is some strategy involved in the class.

I second that. After the update I'm actually playing pyro alot different. During the dogtag scrim, One of the Ego's flat out said that they hate me and my backburner. apparently I was a major annoyance in the map we were on.

On a side note, Soldiers seem to be coming back... not that happy about that.

I feel like people using the backburner has actually made them better pyro players overall. Pyro was one of my most played classes before the update and I haven't played him much since the update until recently, but I've noticed alot of people playing more intelligently with the class, alot of flanking and ambushes, which to me was the way that the pyro was meant to be played.

I think soldiers are getting picked second to pyros and demos because those other two classes are much more well-rounded. They have damage and high mobility with the pyro's natural speed and the demo's sticky run/jumping. The pyro and demo also have the ability to paralyze an uber in place with the use of airblast or stickies.

The soldier is slower with only rocket jump which does not put you in nearly as many places as the stickies. You only get 25 more hp than pyros/demos i believe, 25 less than a backburner pyro. Your killing also relies heavily on spamming and hitting unaware players. To me, their highest use is intimidation. Keep spamming rockets into a tunnel at sporatic times and keep the enemy hesitant on whether he wants to be the sacrificial lamb or not.

My playstyle with the pyro hasn't changed much such the backburner came out, except now I kill more. The extra health really helps, and I can actually kill the people that get caught unaware now. It was so frustrating before the update to burn someone and burn someone, then they turn around and I'm dead in a rocket or a nade or a couple scattergun blasts. The only other thing that changed for me is now I'm a little less worried about fighting large groups. I was so used to isolating people, but I now I can go in, wreak havoc, and exit if the situation looks bad.

I have been playing soldier a little bit more, but that's because if I'm not pyro I like hitting people with the melee weapons, and I'm apparently actually able to kill with the shovel or something. It's fun to play a different class every once in a while. As far as pyros becoming the new default, I kind of agree yet disagree. I remember you used to see 3 soldiers and maybe 1 pyro, yet now I see 3 pyros and maybe 1 soldier. On the other hand, I do also see 3 or 4 demos and then maybe 1 or 2 pyros. So I agree that the soldier has dropped out of the default class, but I don't know where I stand as pyro being the new default.

by the way, does anyone know what's the next update going to be on?

I agree with this when referring to the run of the mill everyday player who generally plays alot of diff classes..

A real soldier who is pro-active about attacking and defending does not have these problems..

You basically just explained how the newbie solider player executes his play style.

For me:

1. Every Rocket jump is planned, making use of HP Packs to regain my jump, i never just rocket jump for no reason, unless we are involved in a huge push and for some reason teleporters are not set up properly.. or a medic who is actually aware of me will give me my hp back

2. I constantly stay jumping, i jump over rockets and demo nades all day long, also it's much better to splash on the ground than totally wiff a rocket past people.. some damage is better than none..

3. Bouncing uber'd players, weather its splitting the medic off ( Yes i headhunt medics all day long, they are the meat and potatoes of offense).
Also, bouncing any player at all is crucial in certain situations.

4. Use the shotgun.... NOT JUST FOR OFFENSE.. it is so usefull to move a demo's stickies and make the 20 second he just used placing that sticky placement useless and having to restart the sticky process.

5. Defense, soldier is best used as a defensive unit and should always be aware of the nearest dispenser as well as every ammo pack and hp pack everywhere..

6. Aiming rockets: You gotta practice this all day long, never die without using as many rockets as possible.. you dont get better at shooting a real gun without doing it all day long, right ?

This is all i have for now... any feedback would be great on this please guys ? I think my soldier game is strong, but i want to get it top notch.
