Three or four months ago my parents signed up with Edge Wireless for an unlimited data plan, about 1 month ago somehow it slowed down, we called up tech support and next day or so fine for a week then goes slow again. We get a new card and a router from AT&T (cause they took over Edge Wireless) thinking okay the network changed, wrong apparently they put a 5gb a month "soft limit" cap on it without telling us cause they can.
Now, Ive been surfing the web, reading newspapers, magazines and watching TV. So for those who think you have unlimited enjoy it while you can, because soon that unlimited will silently magically be capped and one day while you're gaming and you notice your pings higher than normal and it continues and when you call up tech support, you're going to find out why.
Most of us stream music from Live.FM, Pandora,etc; videos from Joost, Hulu, YouTube, etc, download new trial, betas, and full games (from content providers like Steam, Fileplanet, etc), not to mention surf the web, and game well... constantly, so we probably use 200gb a month or so on average. I see it this way a 50gb, 100gb, or 250gb capped plans aren't really bad for just gaming, surfing and occasional game downloads, but 5gb, 10gb, or 20gb that's well... pointless especially for $50 a month.
Sure there's still unlimited internet providers and maybe may survive, but I'm sure we all know that time where you could just constantly download/upload will be a memory...
Also I do realize as speeds increase and more users sign on, providers have to buy more bandwidth, and that costs a lot, but really they only need to cap peak users that are using 85%+ of their bandwidth and continuously at that. Companies such as Time Warner Roadrunner, AT&T DSL, Comcast, Cox Cable, and others are starting to experiment with caps or have them already (Comcast, Cox Cable, Rogers, AT&T WDP, Verizon WDP).
So be warned, you could be next, and don't freak out when you're 10mb connection slows down to 1mb because you've hit you're cap or you get a nasty bill for going over or even worse your service terminated.
Also I writing this because I probably may not (or may) have internet until Verizon DSL (how long until that's unlimited...) gets here in September (if I'm lucky), so Ill be off 'n on (when at friends).
As for sources, too many to list. Just Google "internet caps" you'll be surprised what you come up with...
