I want to know what drives you guys think I should buy? The drive setup I want is a 250GB main, another 250GB just for games, and a 500 for storage. I have never had any problems with my 2 WD drives I have now and overall WD is a well liked brand. I could get this drive setup in WD drives or Seagate drives. What do you guys think?

The reason I'm pondering on getting Seagate drives is because they have 32MB cache where the WD drives ave 16MB. Then again, whatever I pick will be better than what I have now. Which is: 160GB WD 8MB cache, and a 320GB IDE WD
 
I've always used WD and have never had an issue with them. Good solid hard drives, fast, built to last.
 
I'd say Seagate on the sole fact that I had a WD one before that crashed after being used once. Since I have alot of data on it I got to send it to a clean room to get the data extracted off of it which is definitely not cheap. My new computer is using a seagate right now I believe and I havent had any problems yet. -knocks on wood-
 
WD. 5 year warranty.

Never had a problem with either of them. I have a 150GB WD Raptor and a 160GB Seagate backup.

Seagate was bought by Maxtor

and maxtor is notorious for fail-prone drives, so I can't recommend Seagate.

WD on the other hand, has been very good with their drives. I use 2 myself, very high quality stuff.
 
Some observations from years of geekiness....

WD has always been a leading consumer brand. Rock solid drives. Rock solid performance.

Seagate has consistently been among the highest performing high-end drives. They tend to lead the race when it comes to speed of data access and such. Big boys in the server world for that reason.
Note: Yes, Maxtor is lame and has bought Seagate but they still use Seagate's plants and manufacturing processes. So,there hasn't been much reported loss in quality.

So my advice would be simple. Get a huge WD for cheaper as your storage drive. Spend the extra $$$ on a seagate as your main OS/Installation drive and you'll notice the investment in HD access times.

umm Seagate bought out Maxtor.... cause maxtors drives were crap.. losing money.. Seagate buys em up...


I buy seagate drives more then any other.... since you compairing 250/500 GBs to each other I say go Seagate...

if you were compairing WD's 320/640GB HDDs... I'd push WD all the way... single platter higher density platters increase read/write speeds and latency drops because of it...

a LOT of people were replacing their Raptors with the 320/640GB's because of this... until the Veloci-Raptors came out...

Those are just my opinions.

.... I know I'm not entirely tech savvy as I would like to think I am but either it's too early or I just flat out didn't understand that.

Anyways it's nice to hear maxtor got bought out. So happy that one less crappy brand is out there now on it's own.

I'm still not sure yet, I still think I might just go all WD but I still have a bit before I decide.

I heartily recommend Seagate over any other drive manufacturer.

Without actually looking in my cases and counting, I know that at the least I have the following drives all by Seagate: 80GB, 120GB, 200GB, 250GB, 2x320GB, 2x500GB, and 2x750GB. I'm probably missing at least one of my smaller drives in that list. These drives have been acquired over the past six or so years, cover all the standard connector types (PATA, SATA, SATA II), have been in near constant use ever since they were purchased, and only one has failed. The 120GB drive got the click of death syndrome a little over a year ago and was the oldest drive I owned. I checked the warranty and could have gotten a refurb model, but I figured that 120GB really wasn't worth the trouble anymore.

The only thing worth noting with Seagate is how their SATA II drives have a speed limiter jumper on the back that limits them to SATA I speeds. If you remove that jumper, you get full-speed.

i use to build those drives at hitachi......

would have to flash them, load them in, and put them into big rigs and "FRANK" rigs for shipments.. i mostly built the canisters and what not.. was fun :D
