My laptop is on Vista and I'm trying to shrink the drive partition on which Windows is installed. It's 99 GB out of 120 GB. Whenever I go to shrink it it tells me I have 0 reclaimable bytes of data on my partition and thus it cannot be shrunk. I've scoured the internet, the Microsoft help files, everything. Nobody seems to have heard of my problem or even imagined that it could exist. Please help me :(
 
There's an excellent article on this issue here. I have not followed any of their steps/options so I cannot vouch for how effective or safe they are, but at least it explains what's going on and gives some ideas. I hope it helps.

For shrinking partitions, i use a live linux distribution called G-parted. Works well for me, although it's use at your own risk.
 
Yea i recommend G-parted also, you just need to download the iso and burn to a cd, then boot from the cd, its fairly easy to use by also extremely easy to screw up haha
 
Partition Magic works well on Windows partitions...but it also costs a little cash. You're going to need some kind of software to do this safely unless you want to reinstall from scratch...then you can set up the partitions ahead of time.
 
last time I had to resize was to install linux, which luckily is something you can do during installation, so I really had no problems...
 
alright so after disabling all my non-essential system files (pagefile, restore points, hibernation, etc) and running some defrags I just need to consolidate free space which is what my PerfectDisk pro demo is doing now...if this doesn't work I think I'm out of luck
