Sanding it so the heatsink makes contact with the die. Absorbing the heat directly instead of a through a medium. Better heat transfer.

Yea, he's brave. I sand mine down, but just the IHS so it's flat. He totally got rid of it (except the edges, and for a reason) and sanded the cores/die.
