Gimp?

Hiya all,
I've been on to lots of forums which they have stuff like these arts section and all of them mention
"u should have Gimp"
...I've seen some of the people here do say too!
So, I dont really know what the hell is this thing but what is it??
Wanna know,
if its any good I'll download it and use it for my sigs and avatars and stuff

It's a freeware photoshop. Basically. I've heard it's GREAT if you don't want to spend 900 bucks on photoshop. Never used it though. Worth a download, at least I think so.

Yes, it is worth the download. I use it for all of the sigs and sprays I make.

i use gimp personally, i prefer it over PS but ill tell you in an instant that PS > Gimp (well, a skilled PS user)

Yea gimps quite good. I mainly use Paint.net but my brothers use gimp as it is really good. So it is definately worth to download. http://gimp.org/downloads/

I've been using GIMP for years. I love it. Even after installing the full Adobe CS3 Design Premium that I bought for my store on my personal pc at home, I still find myself going back and forth from PS to GIMP.

Gimp is the best... it is so awesome i use it for almost all photo work. I recommend you get it for sure....

I have yet to see a GIMP sig that was made by an experienced user that is as good or better than a Photoshop experienced user.

Here is the order of how I like my image editing software.

Photoshop > Paint.Net > GIMP

Why?

Photoshop: Functionality, slow.
Paint.Net: FAST, not as much functionality, very good UI.
GIMP: Decent speed, functionality is there, horrid UI.

Photoshop: Functionality, slow.

Photoshop really isn't too slow if you've got a new(er) computer.
Unless your working on some mammoth project, I don't find it slow at all..

Here's some GIMP work:

I'll admit that the interface isn't the best for everything, and if somebody gave me a copy of Photoshop, I'd use it, but the Gimp will do 98% of what Photoshop would do. You're paying $500 extra for 2%

And I hear everyone say that Gimp has a horrid UI. This is because Gimp is a UNIX program ported to Windows. I, myself, used to say Gimp had a horrid UI. Then I used it. And continued using it. Yes, I used it because I was broke and refused to crack Photoshop. But after using it for... a week? I got used to the "Gimp way" of doing things. After formal training at College for Photoshop, and a year using Photoshop in my workplace, I still swear by Gimp. True story!

but tbh gimp is better....
really fast, it has the same thing as PS CS3 so no point wasting money on all that...

I really like Gimp from what ive done with it. However, i have more knowledge of photoshop, so its hard for me to switch over. Great program though.

The biggest problem with trying the Gimp is what Passenger said above: You get used to thinking the Photoshop way, and you can't get Gimp to work exactly like Photoshop. Paint.Net works closer to Photoshop then Gimp does... (But I can't use it because it lacks decent selection editing capabilities. I need "Grow Selection" man!)

I actually went the other way; I learned Gimp before I even touched Photoshop, and now Photoshop is backwards to me! Gimp was created in a vacuum; it does things it's own way
