Is it worth it...

So current specs:

3.0Ghz C2D
Asus P5N-D 750i SLI board
XFX 9600GT XXX Edition @ 750mhz 512mb/256bit
4GB Corsair XMS2 DD2-6400
2 x 500gb SATA 300 HDD
600W PSU
1920x1200 Resolution 24" LCD


I was wondering if its worth upgrading to a ATi Radeon 4870 Card from my current 9600GT. I just saw the benchmarks and compared to my card the 4870 gets almost 2x the frames on Crysis with max settings at 1920x1200.

A friend of mine has a 9600 GT, and my 4850 whups up on his. I'm guessing the 4870 would be significantly better.

Keep in mind the power consumption of the two...

9600GT = 107 watts (anandtech.com)
4870 = 278 watts (anandtech.com)

Those are at full load... but are you going to have enough power for the card? At twice the power, I don't think it is really worth it... twice the power = more heat... and highr AC bills to keep your house cool... but that is just me...

I live S. Oregon Coast, never gets hotter than 90 in the summer and always an average of 65 degrees

According to Thermaltakes Power Consumption Calculator with what I have with the 4870 card it uses ~500w at full load which gives me 100w spare [not saying I trust my life with], I mean I could upgrade but if its enough then why bother...

90 during the summer? Lucky... it will be 80+ Christmas Day here...

If you got the money, I say go for it... should be a real kick in the pants over the 9600gt...

You're playing at 1920 x 1200...anything less than a HD4850 would struggle at that resolution in modern, shader-intensive games. A HD4870 is a must really.
