You ever think what you are downloading? Do you think your anti-virus will stop? No! Not all the time your anti virus picks it up you can download file that you think is safe and open or run it or install it. Scan before you run,install, or open. www.virustotal.com It scans your File you upload to the site and checks with all the Anti Virus out there to see if there is a virus cause not ever one wants to lose there passwords because of hackers and keyloggers and botnets :D so i advise you to use this site to your ablitiy. Cause you never know there can be Spy waiting to sap your computer.

I actually never worry about what I download, and believe me, I download a lot. Pay attention to what you download, and don't do anything retarded like "omg, crysis download free! only 3MB as well! AWESOME!"

lol yeah, im in Gooda's boat. I watch what i download and i dont do anything stupid. I probably dont download as much as Gooda, but i still download a bunch of stuff

And if there is anything that i want to test or something, i just use my parents computers ^_^
 
yeah, im always thinking of them when it comes to computer stuff. Their computer is also my experimental computer
 
That's great, but it takes forever to upload decent sized files on most internet connections. I guess the saving grace might be like Havegooda said, most malware (in any form) is fairly small.

This might be the contrary view, but you should not place 100% faith in the reliability of any scanner - online or local to your PC.

The website Spy1 references is an aggregate scanner of several different engines. But all of the scan engines use a signature database and are reactive. Hence, there is always a lag between when a "zero day" infection is released and when a scanner's engine has been updated.

In other words, someone has to have previously identified something "bad" in any given virus, worm, trojan horse, etc and then programmed the scanner to recognize the "signature" of that virus, worm, trojan horse, etc.

Manufacturers and programmers try to be proactive but IMHO, they are largely ineffective. Hackers are always trying to come up with new ways to infiltrate systems and even "proactive" scanners are looking for certain patterns of behavior to sound the alarm.

The point? Just because you "scan" something doesn't mean you're safe.

And actually, the bigger/biggest threats now come from your web browser. How many people, for example, without question - willingly play flash games or enable JavaScript in their web browsers? Do you really know what is being downloaded and executed?

So, practice safe downloading, only enable content when necessary (NoScript for the win!), goto websites you trust, don't goto websites you're unsure about, run a software firewall, know what's in your startup file, and of course, have a good antivirus and antimalware system.

Edit: I play flash games all the time. There's a difference between knowledgeable and paranoid.
