Processor problems or somthing else??

alright, for some reason my processing usage will randomly jump from like 4-10% all the way to like 50- 80 % when my computer is just sitting doing nothing. I end all the unnecessary processes bringing me down to about 25- 30 processes. Is the problem in my processor or something else in my computer such as power supply? Also every now and then it will be at a normal rate of 4-10, and the fan on the processor is quite, however when it gets loud it starts to jump. When i installed my processor ( 2.2ghz), i didn't put any thermal paste in between, could this be the problem?

EDIT:
I put in new thermal paste, but its still jumping but at a smaller rate now its 20-30% and the fan is quieter. Also there were no viruses found

Probably malware as KillZone said. HAve you an antivirus program you can use to scan your system?
 
NO thermal paste? that is probably the cause of fan loudness bc w/o the paste there is almost always less contact to transfer heat from the cpu to the heatblock which would keep the cpu hotter & increase fan speed making it louder. Do you get random restarts, shutdowns, visual artifacts or anything? As for the cpu load, I'm not sure.
 
If you have thermal problems, then your CPU spikes could be caused by the lack of paste. When the temperature goes up, the CPU becomes less efficient so its ability to optimally run becomes less.

That said, if this is happening more and more frequently, you should be pulling the logs from Event Viewer to see if anything abnormal is happening. You can also run Performance Monitor (XP and Vista) to set specific monitors to watch and see what is consuming the most CPU time on your PC.

And check for viruses too.
 
alright thanks for the help, however i don't have a good anti-virus, i only have avg 8.0 free version or something along the lines of that, and ill try the thermal paste to see if it helps.
 
AVG Free is just fine.

Get some thermal paste. And what do the logs and monitors show?
 
You shouldn't get CPU spikes due to no thermal contact solution. But it's probably a ~bad~ thing that you didn't use any kind of thermal paste, tape, or Arctic Silver 5. You may want to go back and do that now :P
