COD4 MP is terribly slow

ok so here's the situation. Just bought COD4 off Steam today. It's already updated to latest version and i put the Punkbuster thing on it.

When single player loads on my preferred graphics settings, it's quick and it's easy no problems at all. however, when i go to load the multiplayer part with the exact same settings, it's a hassle to just get around the menu. even the menu lags. and it's impossible to play on a server even though my ping read below the 100.

did anybody else have this problem or have a theory to fix it? thanks.

Make steam run in Offline Mode when you run COD4 MP

So says the poster here, and it works fine afterwards.


On the Steam main window, click the File menu and sselect Go Offline... Give that a go and if it still doesn't work it may be something else. Good luck

Unfortunately both the offline method and the manual update didn't work. later i can try removing punkbuster and see if MP could still work.

however i won't be able to test this for about a week since i'll be out of town. but i'll be checking these boards and would love to hear other people's theories.

found a fix to this problem (though might be considered temp)

turning on "dual video card" option to yes cleared it up quick. don't know why this would work with my single 8800GT but it did. menu and server games were lag free.
