what the title says makes my games run laggy and sometimes gets so bad my computer is burning or shuts down by itself

well what games do u run & what settings do u have ur games on? usually the higher the settings, the less performance ull get outta ur video card (depending on the game & what kinda video card u got). its always better 2 put the settings a lil lower & that way ull get better performance & ur vid card wont overheat.

try riva tuner... free software download should give you fan control.

Also, if you know what you are doing, you can try to reseat the heatsink and fan on the video card and apply some better thermal paste. Because the overheating may be a cause of the heatsink coming loose, has happened before. If you have always had this problem, then yes, turn up the fan, but it seems to me that chances are over time the heatsink has come loose reducing your cooling.

I actually prefer to use EVGA Precision which has OC and Fan profiles plus Hooks for D3D 8, 9, and 10 so you can monitor you temps in game ^^

Yeah, the utility kicks butt. Really easy to overclock and change fan speeds. But not everyone has eVGA. It's basically riva tuner with an eVGA logo slapped on it. Works great. Kick the fan up to 70 or 80% and your card temps go WAY way down.

Fallout 3 at max settings with stock fan speed (40%): 60-62C
Fallout 3 at max settings with 80% fan speed: 50C
big difference

I had the same problem with my 2 8600GT's and yanked everything out of my case to really check if it was the temps and tried it in "overclock setup" (caseless) and yep, it was.

EVGA Precision is by far the best, and it works with all cards.
