I don't know what media player you use, but I've been using Winamp for a long time - since version 2.x. I had been using Winamp for a few years before I discovered this feature, and I totally love it now. Here's a link to a couple video examples:

Just watching the video doesn't really do it justice, though. You really have to see it as your wallpaper.
In Winamp, hit "CTRL + P" to bring up preferences. Scroll down to "Visualization" and select "Milkdrop." Config it if you wish, then click "Start" and "Alt + D" to start desktop mode. This will set "Milkdrop" as your background/wallpaper. The effect is totally awesome.
