feel like I'm doing something wrong

I'm asking this in a legitmate bid to get a bit better at CS:S. I am far, far worse at it than I ever was at original CS back in the day, and I'm confused.

Very often I find myself with an enemy dead to rights in my sights, pull trigger, see blood on their model... then die immediately only to find either I never hit them or put 1 hit into them for 20+ damage.

I've gone through the full how-to-fix-lag thread, done all of that. I've slowed my mouse way down to stabilize aming, I've worked on trying to be moving a minimal amount when shooting (unless in full spray and pray mode), and I'm just lost.

I visually hit way more than the game thinks I do, and I just don't get it. The avatars of the enemy on screen is all I have to go by to aim, and if that's not cutting it... the heck am I supposed to aim at?

Anywhoo... if anyone has any advice, I'm all ears. Thank you in advance.

this is kinda hard to say in text JUST USE UR SOUND is all i an say really hide behind corners and stuff

lol, I dunno, I've had this problem before, I just kinda got used to it. I guess practice? xD Thats all I have.. Sorry.

Goodness comes with experience, just play young one, and eventually you might reach the level of Geno

You just gotta keep on practicing. Just walk in small areas and crouch. Also, do quick checks around the corner. Keep the enemy in a suprised state

Thanks for the replies, guys. Guess I'll keep hacking away at it. I'm already doing much of what you mention, especially sound.

I'm a sound nut, always have been, and have relied on positional sound for years to tell me where folks are. :)

Well crap. Just went into the options in CS:S and was fiddling with the audio tab... seems CS:S cannot feed a straight 5.1 signal through digital out, ergo I am indeed not getting correct positional audio at all in game. I'm barely getting right and left in any discrete fashion.

All its feeding out to my receiver is stereo, and it's not even good stereo.

Man, you'd think they'd give the option for Dolby D, DTS, or something that could handle providing a 5.1 signal for people that run more than just plain-jane pc speakers on their rig.

No wonder I've been misreading which way the footsteps are coming from.

I always play with headphones, it really gives you an advantage. If you get good quality headphones you'll be able to know where everyone is. People stomp around maps thinking they're being all ninja but with some headphones they're sitting ducks.

For some reason headphones and such never worked for me, I always put on Korpiklaani or such and rampage..

My overal score is mostly better with music on...

But looking around corners, try to predict where the enemy goes, etc. etc.

this happens to me too, i get confused where exactly the hit boxes are, and it seems like while moving they are just lagging behind the actual model by a little bit, depending how fast they are moving.
to practice this or find out for sure i kinda suggest playing on a zombie mod server, that way there are lots of enemies/ammo/hp for you to test this out for sure.
and ya, make sure you don't run with any choke.
i suggest on our servers (since they are 66 tick) cl_cmdrate 66 is autoset (cannot get higher) and put cl_updaterate to 30. that seems to work perfect for me

Ooooo-k.... after some more investigating last night it appears that Source engine uses DirectSound, which does not exist in Windows Vista. Loads of people are apparently having issues getting 5.1 working in Source-based games because of this.

I fiddled a bit and have managed to get verifiable stereo working, so that will have to do.

And Junk, the bot server does sound like a good place to get some practice in. I'll have to set one of those up.

i've always hated vista! just another reason to why i hate it so much.
