Wasn't sure if this should go in talk or help.
But i recently got a very nice touch-screen w/keyboard phone (Samsung Impression). and i have unlimited text/internet. So i was wondering if any of you have heard if there is a phone app for steam?

new mini-computer type phones are the way things seem to be going... they already have so many instant messengers built in, that this would be nice to have.

thanks.

meebo connects all the various instant messaging forms, but steam does not seem to be on the list yet. Maybe they will include is soon! *hope*

I think a steam phone app (even for instant messaging purposes) is a waste of time. Before they even think of making one, they should focus on perfecting the PC version, the one that crashes when it feels like crashing

they should make a native mac version first...

Considering that most PC gamers use.... PC, i doubt they will make a OSX version. but you can run steam with crossover, correct?

If they opened up the messaging and allowed people to connect to it, then they can let 3rd parties worry about integration, while they continue to "fix" the PC version. I'd really love to see the Steam messaging protocol in a few apps/situations.

thanks for hijacking my thread beta.

To ask again: Does anyone know of a steam app for phones? i don't care if its made by valve. just curious if anyone knows of one. thanks

Messaging, for the most part. Then there's groups. I mean, Steam on your phone wouldn't be any worse than steam on your phone. ;) Obviously, we're not looking to play games here. Who knows, maybe adding a mobile section to the Steam Store. Sell games for non-smartphones too. I'd love that.

Again, there's no API for Steam, and Valve never released anything, so you won't see one anytime soon, as much as most of the community would like to see one.

Well, there is an API provided by the SDK, but it's not useful for Rellik's purpose. The relevant headers are located in public/steam/ for those brave enough to make an empty mod. Otherwise: http://svn.bgmod.com/code/trunk/public/steam/isteamfriends.h

A quick look over it doesn't show any available functions to communicate, just things related to your friends list.

But otherwise, no proper API means it's going to be a while. The only viable option is some reverse engineering, which will take a while to make some proper research and code on PC, let alone phones.

Edit:

Forgot to mention that there's also a possibility of trying it on a Windows Mobile device running Windows CE or XP Embedded. Probably have a higher chance on the latter, but I'm not sure how many devices out on the market use XP Embedded.

My bad, then. No API for the messaging/communication capabilities. Thanks for the clarification, VoiDed. :) Still, the endpoint is, no messaging until Valve/Steam plays nice with developers.

Thanks for all the help guys! (Except Beta) *shakes an angry fist at Beta*

I believe this can be locked now!
