ive been thinking of avoiding this movie because it seems so much like the matrix just tweaked differently...
it seems that its all been done before and its set in a not so futuristic world and a little bit too much borrowed from the matrix...

It wasn't as mind melting as I would have liked it to be, but still probably the best movie of the summer.

Yeah , no other writer could have thought of a story this deep. Christopher Nolan is incredible. It took him 10 year's to write.
I could name a few...but my film geekery/elitism aside, Nolan has crafted a pretty clever film.
No, it's not like The Matrix. It has one of the most interesting plots I have seen in a long time, though.
Don't know how you got the matrix out of this, was nothing like it, saw no comparison at all.

Well Nolan used the Matrix as inspiration for the story and a there are indeed a few similarities between the two. Especially the scene where:
DiCaprio shows Ellen Page dreaming for the very first time. The scene is incredibly close to where Morpheus jacks Neo into computer simulations and starts explaining the history and mechanics of the Matrix.
Though the film is just as much Dark City as it is the Matrix.
It's close for the beginning, and a little while after that, but then it kind of goes away from the path of "This is dreaming[/The Matrix], it works like this." And proceeded to end quite differently. Well, up until the very end.
