what is 6 channel audio?

Ok so I'm not quite sure if 6 channel means 6.1 surround sound or if its 5.1 surround sound.

I have 5.1 surround sound setup and when i'm watching a movie, it gives me either 2 channel option or 6 channel option. Not sure if 6 channel means 5.1, considering there are 5 speakers and 1 bass.

Anyone know wut 6 channel audio stands for?

To be crystal clear: 6 channel audio is what Silent Predator said.

In the general consumer lingo: 6 Channel Audio = 5.1 sound.

(6.1 = 7 channels, which also exists)

Be prepared to be sold the wrong thing if you are speaking with someone at Sears or Best Buy about this.
