Processor to Motherboard compatibility

I bought an ECS A780gm-a ultra motherboard a few months ago. I haven't had the chance to use it, because of minor problems or the lack of funds to purchase a processor (the current one I have for the motherboard is in use). Finally I have to the chance to purchase a processor and I've been having some problems. First off, I'll show the specifications for my motherboard, for possible future reference:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135235

Now I will show you the processor I've been looking at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103843&Tpk=amd 440

I just want to know if the processor is compatible with the motherboard because the CPU types that it are compatible with (according to newegg) aren't even fully correct. I've asked around and some people have said yes while others have said no. I just want a clear answer.

Also, the processor's 4th core can be unlocked, if I were to buy the processor and unlock the 4th core, will it work on the motherboard if it wouldn't work beforehand?

Yes it will work, but you won't be able to unlock any 4th core. The CPU has no L3 cache at all as well. I think the only boards that support it so far are the AM3 boards (mainly the AMD chipsets)

It will still work great though, and overclocking should be fairly easy.

Yep.
And if you plan on overclocking, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
(I have that board. -_-)

Why wouldn't I be able to unlock the 4th core? I'm probably not going to anyway, but I would like to know why I can't. Also, I know it doesn't have a L3 cache, thats what make Athlons so cheap in comparison to Phenom CPUs. I'm not made of money, so I'm unfortunately cutting corners a bit.

The SB is only SB710.
Core Unlocking is supported in certain SB750s (IIRC) and above.

ummm......in english please

SB = South bridge

you'll see on the specs of your mother board it should say "North bridge" and then "south bridge" if your south bridge is not a 750 series then it will not support unlocking of the 4th core is what he is saying look it up in your motherboard manual.

try it. enable ACC in your bios and see what happens. Athlon IIs have been confirmed to unlock cores. be advised though, it may not run stable at stock (which is why the core is dormant in the first place).

South Bridge 750 and SB 710 unlock cores

(your motherboard has 750)

I have SB750, but I can't unlock cores. It depends on the motherboard.

E/ Nevermind. CPU-Z keeps changing what I have from IE 1934 or something to SB750, and now SB700. :/ I have no idea which one is correct.

Remember Phobus, type in msconfig in the run programs thing. Then under the boot tab go to advanced and uncheck where it says "Number of Processors". Then in the bios, use the settings to unlock the cores, reboot, and go back to msconfig and check the same box and put "4" in the processors. Reboot again and success (maybe).

I don't care enough.
I bought my processor before Athlon tri's and quad's were released. And core unlocking isn't 100% reliable, so I haven't looked into it.

Ahh I get it now....was a bit loopy when i last posted. I haven't had a chance to buy the processor yet >.>, but I'm gonna get it today.

700 wont unlock anything (since you don't have ACC, you probably don't have sb750)

or if you were just trying to unlock your 240 that is impossible. Athlon IIX2's are all their own die, so it is impossible for them to have extra cores. (unless amd screws up bad and puts a AthIIX4 in an X2 chip)

Just noticed that, 240 only has 2 cores, the 440 I purchased (and still isn't here) has 4 with 3 unlocked. Also, If Phobus has the same board as I do, then it should have ACC. Its just not useful in that case.

I think we pretty much confirmed the Ph?'s board has SB700

Yours could be a newer revision that has the 710sb which could unlock cores.
