Improving my FPS?

Power

EGO Zealot
Recently, I just discovered what FPS really is (I'm a newbie with computer specs) and my FPS isn't that great. I tried to improve it by putting a lot of console commands based on the "CS:S Guides + Tips" and I got it up 4 or 5 fps. What are some other ways I can improve my FPS?

(I just copied it off my system properties)
Specs:
Manufacturer: HP
Model: p6310f
Processor: AMD Athlon (tm) II x4 630 Processor 2.80 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB (5.75 GB usable)
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9100

My FPS rates also vary depending on the map/server.
Jail: 20-30 FPS. Sometimes when there's 44 people it goes to 15 ish.
Highschool: 35-40 FPS
Other: 25-40 FPS

I'm just horrible with computers, so any tips on improving my FPS would help. Thanks :)

Close things that are running in the background with task manager. They are usually some big resource sappers.

I suggest a new videocard.
I have a nVidia 9600 + 4Gb of RAM, and it works good.
I have a constant ~110 FPS that way and I'm maxed in graphics options.
On jail maps though, I may get down to 25-30.

You can run it in windowed mode. ;)

I run it in a 1024x768 window on my 1280x800 laptop, and it made less lag/higher fps for me. :)

new video card

mainly u need a more up to date videocard and a good processor. But really css isn't that graphically demanding so you dont need some wicked expensive one. Look on www.newegg.com for a good graphics card to buy. Hope you can figure it out!:)

Thanks for your guys tips on "Buying a new computer, graphic card, etc..." but reading Daria's guide "Increasing FPS" got my fps fixed. I went from 25 - 45 (jail) and in highschool 70.
No new graphic cards needed. :)

You should be able to run Steam games (or most) with those specs at or higher than you are now. I have an Athlon dual core 7750 6 meg ram 2 video cards (each not that much on thier own) Radeon HD 3200 and Radeon 3450 in Crossfire and run FPS about 60 to 100...

Good luck my friend.

Listen to me... I went from 100-150 fps to 250-400..
Get a fps config (reccomended to get the one from netcodeilluminati.com and fathoms which is uploaded somewhere on forums and put both autoexecs together, or i can upload mine for you). Use a smaller resolution, you'll get use to it and makes sniper crosshairs thicker. fps configs lower your detail super a lot and if you need any help with it give me a pmmmm.

how are they that low? i have a dual and only 3 gigs of ram and i get 300 all teh time >.>

I'd say a graphics card might help, That's definately what I need because i'm constantly being hit with FPS lag. I believe it might be because it's overheating and the FPS goes to the crapper.
