Challenges.
After that, getting Gold ranking on said Challenges.
If you're not already aware, Blizzard has provided you with what is essentially a skill assessment/trainer program in the single player mode of StarCraft 2. Completing each of these challenges will teach you the basics of the game. Completing them with a gold ranking will assure you that you have mastered the basics (macro and occasionally micro) necessary to progress into online play.
A lot of people suggest replays, and that is absolutely the best way to go...after you understand wth it is that you're watching.
If you're a veteran BW or beta player than you already know this doesn't apply to you. However, if you're new to Starcraft, or new to playing Starcraft online and semi-competitively, this is the Boot Camp for you.
Replays are there for you after you understand enough of what's going on to see what (and how) they do differently and better than you do. Many a new player will look at a replay and say "Wow they get that out fast. Ok, I'll just build it like they do." Putting that into practice, and understanding the nuances of why people in replays (worth watching) are so much faster than you will be much easier once you complete the challenges.
Trust me, it will help you immensely.
I don't care what race you play, a gold ranking on the challenges is an essential first step for every new player that wants to start making up the massive gap between them and people that have been playing since the beta. It's not going to happen over night, but it will make your learning curve much easier to handle.
You can try figuring things out the hard way, or you can have Blizzard show you.
