Overheating GPU

So a friend of mine, known in eGO as Sealsy. Has been having computer issues. He has found the issue and has determined its his GPU. He said Speed fan has the temperature at 150 Celsius. So my question is. What could be causing his card to be over heating so bad? He said it has a fan on it and everything and his card hasnt always done this. Any Ideas?

Give the computer a good ol clean and dust. Fan might be caked. But aside from just what GPU does she/he have, what other components can you tell us. Ie Case, PSU, etc.

I know for a fact that the card is an Nvidia card. Not sure which card though. Im not too sure what brand of computer it is. But before this problem he could play games without issues.

1)has he checked to make sure that the GPU cooling fan is operating?
2)if it is Nvidia, is he overclocking the vid card in any way? is he manually operating the GPU cooling fan?
3)does he have any Nvidia support software installed, ie Nvidia Precision, Nvidia System Monitor etc?

Probably not

Dont think so

Not that i know of.

both great places to start.

Another possibility is that the thermal paste used to make sure heat is transferring from the GPU to the heatsink has become powdered and useless. Unfortunately, checking for the problem requires fixing the problem as you are required to remove the heatsink from the GPU to check the paste. Anytime you remove a heatsink, you need to clean both surfaces and re-apply thermal paste to the GPU before re-seating the heatsink.

If, however, you remove the GPU's heatsink and find a strip of metal (usually an indium alloy/gallium or the like) then the thermal bonding medium is not your culprit.

I hope this helps you!

Well im just getting extra opinions from you guys. Hes been plagued with this problem for a while now and I told him yesterday that i think it may be his power supply because he was only experiencing the problem in steam games. But the retail games he had worked fine. So my logic was maybe the graphics card was pulling too much power, more than his power unit would supply causing the issue.

So now, im going to his house this weekend and im going to open up his case and have a look inside. I think that 1 either his exhaust fan is clogged. Or the graphics card fan or the card itself has some dust built up that may be causing the heat to sit on his card. Ill check the thermal paste problem that was suggested.

If I run into anymore questions ill be sure to check in with you guys before i proceed with anything. And Ill be sure to update you guys if I solve the problem that way I can confirm or share a new issue that may affect any one of us.

Hi i was the friend he was referring to.

The card that was overheating was a geforce 7600 gs, the temp was at 115degrees Celcius
the problem was that the fan had died, found out too late....

But I am looking at new cards and I thought i would see what you guys had too say about these two that I am looking at.

1.GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB

2.Nvida GeForce GTS 250 Graphics Video Card 1Gig DDR3 Ram

Which one is better?

Also the games I generally play are TF2, L4D2, Mass Effect 2, and borderlands
Will I be able to run all those games on modest settings with either of those 2 cards?

Here are my computer specs
Win Vista 64 bit os
5Gb ram
500 Gb HDD
Intel Pentium Dual CPU @ 2.40 GHz
I think my power supply is like a 500w
and I have a PCI-e slot

Well, your CPU is going to slow it down some, but it will still work great.

Borderlands is the only game I can't comment about, because I've never played it. The other games can be easily maxed out with that card.

how do i upgrade my cpu and how much does it cost?

All depends on what kind of CPU you go for really. Can run anywhere from 1 to 3 hundred.

In my opinion if you do decide to go ahead and upgrade the CPU, Id go with an Intel i7 which will run upwards of 200 dollars depending on which one you get. Can any eGO member here verify the reliability of the i7's? But there is always the i5 and i3 processors to look at. Not sure of the costs though.

do i have to upgrade the cpu?

No, you'll be just fine with just getting a new GPU. But your processor will not allow it to run at its full potential.

Kinda like football players when they are training, they have a small parachute tied to them, the parachute holds the players back.

The GPU is the player
CPU the Parachute

The GPU will perform great with your current CPU, but your CPU will not allow the GPU to run at its full potential. Im not too sure if this causes damage in the long run or not. Maybe a tech guru from eGO knows the answer to that.
