he's actually more along the lines of a 'plague burner' - those masks were a early form of gas masks, and the torch was used (among other things) to dispose of infected objects.

The mask that the pyro is wearing was actually warn by the plague doctors, though, to stop them from getting the plague while treating the patient.
Argh! Pirates! Nice find. Has the artist (or anyone else) maybe made this into a TF2 menu screen?
