Convince me

Forum Fiend
Well all you ATI/AMD fans out there i am your rival the BEST NVIDIA/INTEL!

anyway....

Um i just wanted to see if you guys can sway me into maybe building into AMD/ATI next time i build or recommend it to other people

i am talking benchmarks here (i know price wise) just try to sway me i have an open mind (somewhat)

It depends entirely on what you are doing. As well as your budget.

And imo, fanboyism is stupid. It makes you potentially spend more money on a worse product just so you can have your precious brand loyalty.

budget 1000-2000ish

i agree with that. but i would always build intel/nvidia because they are trusted. And i am trying have you guys show me the light on the other side

FYI, you can just call it AMD now. This was in the news this morning.

I'm gonna assume Phobus will correct me, bc it seems any tech topic I comment on, he's right there with me so...

If you're looking at PC Gaming, and looking at the latest news with which video card being the best and fastest, AMD and nVidia have been flip-flopping the crown now for the past two years or so, when AMD/ATI (at the time) wasn't able to beat the 8xxx series and 9xxx series from nVidia. So what AMD/ATI did was aim to undercut their competition by making good/fast video cards for lower prices. So if they couldn't get the fastest video card crown, they could get the best bang-for-the-buck crown (as well as selling a lot of cheap video cards, but that's a different matter).

Anyways, AMD/ATI had a re-envisioning of their product, and there's a couple reasons to look at going AMD/ATI over Intel/nVidia (or Intel/ATI; AMD/nVidia).

1) Price: From reviews that I've seen (from tomshardware.com) most of the mid-range video card wars are won by AMD due to its pricing and performance. nVidia may do better, but cost $40 more. And when it's $40 more, it then competes against a faster AMD GPU, thus losing. However, pricing always changes so its an argument you can base only on the present, and hopefully an educated guess about future prices (supply vs demand) for the video card.

2) Relationship: Wayyy back in 2004, 2005, the harmonious relationship for CPUs/GPUs was AMD/nVidia vs Intel/ATI. Then AMD bought ATI out for $5.4 BILLION dollars. Fast forward several years, and AMD and ATI have learned a few lessons: A) ATI wasn't worth the $5.4 Bn buyout. If anything, it was more likely worth $2 Bn for AMD, though stock prices and ATI's GPU market share was higher and more successful pre-merger (it sunk post-merger), B) AMD has successfully incorporated ATI's personnel into its ranks, C) There are new technologies and products emerging from the merger that means AMD video cards will work better with other AMD products.

3) Fanboyism: The weakest reason for them all, but hey, some people just always cheer for the team they want to love (or want to hate).

Gotcha thank you for the input

i think the reason i dislike ATI is i once had i card. and it was just horrible the card was bad and the drivers....omg...the drivers

but everyone already knows these things.

So i guess i will research Benchmarks for the parts in my budget and see.

question? how are the ATI drivers now? i have heard good things but are they better then the nvidia drivers?

What is this brand loyalty you speak of?

I get whatever doesn't suck. Right now AMD/ATI=kinda suck

Reasons (AMD):
-crummy architecture that needs a major refresh. (bulldozer?)
-no fun to OC, you hit a SOLID BRICK WALL at about 3.8-3.9GHz.
-No motherboards that support SLI and don't suck.

Reasons (ATI):
-WORST DRIVERS ON THE PLANET!!!!!!!!!, Don't get me wrong, they are wonderfully fine for 1 monitor, but with 3 monitors in eyefinity, the drivers start to die.
-Overpriced, N outclasses them at every price level >$199
-5 dimensional shader, no beuno for folding. CUDA=mucho beuno
-DX11 performance=no

Reasons why I like (AMD):
-Cheap
-Nice motherboards that are cheap, don't need to spend $200+ on a nice board.
-underdog
-socket loyalty, You can put a 6 core in a 3 year old AM2 board.
-fine for gaming

Reasons Why I like (ATI)
-Great budget cards
-low power consumption
-red is a beast color
-usually cheaper, although not the case with the 5XXX

Reflex brings up some good points, and I think this is whats stopping me from buying my AMD/ATI (or AMD now :) ) build.

1)
Drivers blow: Always have, Always will.

2)The Architechture and OC leave to be desired, like Reflex said, OC past 3.9, trying to hit 4 isnt worth the Much Voltage adjusting, and even then, its still harder.

I hope BullDozer will change this :D

if u have the funds go intel has nice overclocking abilities and it is plain fast at stock speeds, Core I7 1366 socket

never used the new ati

Why do 1366 boards blow unless you drop small fortunes on them?

I have to pay 400$ for a tri sli, xfire ready, USB and data 3, good oc and good looking board, it's nuts.

Btw, Same features on a 1156, 250$ -_-

If your a buisinessman with lots of worldly possessions, or a closet gamer who lives in his moms basement, and his only worldly posession is this pc, go intel!

ATI cards are good, but their drivers die on you all the time. I HATE those damn drivers. I'm considering Nvidia now...

AMD is not really great for benchies (intel/Nvida trumps there)........ For just about everything else, you wont really notice a difference.

I have a Intel/ATi mix right now. Even though it's "last gen", it still performs like a monster for me. I picked up my first ATi card ever (4870) and found it to absolutely phenomenal. I've never had a driver issue, and it OC's pretty easily. My intel CPU (q9500) runs mostly at stock speed since I find the difference in stock vs. OC to be little to no difference in terms of real performance gain. Also, unless you have some i7, my CPU performs very well.

What are you talking about? I got to 3.9 on my 550BE on 1.45v, and only raising the multi. Not hard at all. 4.0, or anything higher=immpossible.

Ati drivers have always been fine to me on one screen. Only problem is with 3 screens.

I went intel b/c i wanted to do this:
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1366900

Now it's about as stable as *insert unstable thing here*, but it is 4.5GHz none the less.
