Some help plz on DoDS

Okay i tried to join both don and ava servers today and when i joined i was extremely laggy ...

heres my theory why it could have been laggier than what i usually am

1. the Steam Ban Detox (w/e the true name is) is using too much memory when i try to join (i dunno) and takes like 80 - 90 seconds and when its done still laggy so im booted for high ping

2. i need more memory though i have a gig

if theres any other possible reason plz tell me cause i really am bored not being able to play DoDs

Ram will always help, i would suggest gettting 2 gigs at least. Also, next time when you get on, type net_graph 3 into console. If you choke is high, type these 3 commands in

Rate 20000
Cl_update rate 60 << Number varies, higher the choke, higher the #. 150-200 if about 60 ping wise
Cl_cmdrate 66

if that doesnt work..idk

k well i have net_graph on 2 cause its distaracting somewhat
rate cant go higher than 4500 only on 56k
changing cmd/update rates dont help much on a 56k
im gonna try to get more ram
also i set the hl2.exe process at high priority which helps bout 5-12 % for ping when SB detox is scanning
ill try to change those again, havent messed with them in while so might help

Your on a 56k?

Detox only does a sweep of your config.cfg file looking for suspect cvars violations on server join. Thats a very small text file (maybe 6kb).

You may also want to try cl_allowdownload "0" which will not download sprays, ect at connect.

cl_allowupload "0" if you have sprays selected to use.


Also make sure you are terminating Aim, Xfire, torrents, anything online really.

Netcode has changed a little from the last patch. Along with that, a better quality codec for voice will require more bandwidth. While broadband users may not see a difference, a 56K will.


Have you tried a different server to compare results. You should also find one which runs Detox and see what happens.

Well, I think your fundamental problem is that you're on 56K. Sure people have all these ways to improve speed and stop other applications from hogging what little bandwidth there is, but the easiest solution is to get some form of internet connection that is faster (I used to have a lowly 1Mb connection and I got anything from 60+ for my ping).

If you're in an area that doesn't have high-speed internet you could always try a satellite

but when the voice codec was updated i was fine
satellite is laggier than 56k though speeds for downloads are faster and the only thing running is steam when i play

yeah found out what it was my rate was set to 30000 instead of 4500
also cl_allowup/download helps with the ping

where people check in and dont check out (they just like living here)
a small town of 1200 people on oregons beautiful coastline (seriously it is)
ya verizon $300 t1 charter(cable) same price or more but the dsl/cable internet line is closed for only like 8 businesses so homes cant really get it now could get a laptop for wifi from the hotspots here but dont have $1200 for a good gaming comp

OMG, that's insane! Mine is $100, and that includes digital cable, with a movie pack, timeshifting, HBO and others.

yeah that is pretty crazy my 3mb is only 60/month and with expanded basic cable is only 80/month so i guess Arkansas got one thing right lol

yeah we have digital cable and all that but no high speed
probably should drag a cable line from a city 30 min north of here that has hi-speed lol gotta save for 30 miles of cable plus internet ... dang what a dilema lol
