Hi all,

I am proposing an update to the current map voting system. Currently the way that it works for our servers is players can nominate up to a few map for voting, with any extra slots being filled up by random maps. Once the vote has started, these maps are then voted on, with players casting one vote on the map they wish to play. If there is not a sufficient majority, a run off vote is created with the top voted maps.

This system is very simple and works pretty well, the obviously popular maps more or less obviously get voted for. However, I would like to propose a slight improvement to this current system called Ranked Voting (or Instant Runoff Voting). Here is a quick 4 minute video explaining how this would work. Essentially, rather than only picking 1 map that a person wants, they can pick the top X maps (for now let's say 3) in order of preference.

A quick example would be if the options were
  1. jb_arcade
  2. jb_quake
  3. jb_obama

Let's say the votes are as follows
  1. jb_arcade had 45% of #1 votes
  2. jb_quake had 40% of #1 votes
  3. jb_obama had 15% of #1 votes

Under the current system arcade would win. But what if the people that voted obama would rather have gone to quake instead?
Ex:
jb_arcade had 45% of #1 votes, 20% of #2 votes
jb_quake had 40% of #1 votes, 50% of #2 votes
jb_obama had 15% of #1 votes, 30% of #2 votes.

This new system would go through and say "Well, obama didn't win, so let's apply the player's second vote". Since jb_quake had 50% of secondary votes (that are applied since obama didn't win), jb_quake would be selected as the next map, since more players preferred it over the other options.

Implementation
This would be fairly straight forward. A menu would show up (as normal) with a list of 5 maps to pick from. Once a player picked a map, it would remove that map and show the same menu for the player's second pick. The player can always opt out of any votes (including the first). I personally think this would be a better compromise for the majority of players and servers.

Let me know what you think!

I'm more of a fan of approval voting (unranked multiple choice) rather than ranked voting

Either way being able to vote for more than 1 map should hopefully result in more map variety overall

Approval voting would probably be infinitely easier to code all things considered. Both systems would likely be better than our current one in my opinion.

I agree. Back when I played regularly it was easy to notice certain maps get played every single time they were off cooldown for nomination.

More variety is always a good thing

So what this is, is if my vote for my number 1 map wasn't picked, the number 2 option I have will start receiving my votes.

I like this system and I will +1 it however I still think people are just gonna vote the thing they want as number 1 and things might not change

its not a bad idea but i feel like the popular maps are going to be played even more than the less popular ones

This idea is definitely sufficient, although as what BeastTheNinja said and I quote, "The popular maps are going to be played even more than the less popular ones" does bring a good point to where I've seen people leave for playing such an overplayed map, let's take jb_clouds for example, It's one of the most played maps within JB, although it is a really good map, I tend to see people disliking it for being voted all the time and want something new, with this system newly added (if it were to be added) I think this could scratch some players off the game, but I actually really like this system, but I think the current system is good enough. But I'll give a benefit of a doubt to the current system. +1

Good idea, but lets be honest... How did Obama even get 15% of votes????

So my thing with this is it doesn't consider that if map1 has a majority, but then the losing minority makes a particular map the majority, what happens to the now majority's second vote? What happens if the now-losing majority would've preferred to play Obama instead, and THAT is now the majority?

I just think the current system works and this is just negatively impacting the power of a winning vote, It's like "sorry, ur map won the vote but not the second vote, get rekt"

I think the more straightforward solution is to get the rest of the maps "higher in quality", such that we get the variety that way, because there aren't any "undesirable" options.

Maybe I am groggy and don't see the genius here, but I think it should stay as-is

4g0tt3nSou1 4g0tt3nSou1 I’d recommend looking at the video. it’s more so taking into account votes that were on unpop maps and saying ”well Obama didn’t win, so would you prefer arcade or quake. The first votes majority is still considered.

I likely may impelemment this as underlying logic and get some stats on what would have been played vs what actually was played.

I think changing to a system like this would benefit the server by diversifying the maps without compromising the majority vote.

I will talk to the rest of CS LE to see what they think, thanks for this suggestion.

Just bumping this. I think this would be a very beneficial change to the servers, and encourage those that do not understand how the system works to do their own research or see the video I've included above. I would strongly suggest this, and keep in mind we can always revert this change if it doesn't work out.

Bumping this again. Found another video by CGP that even better explains this form of voting.

Highly recommended for those that do not understand what ranked voting is

I think the system we have now works best. I don't want to have to choose three different maps each time, just one.
