How did you get into Counter-Strike?

Just a random thread for conversation. Why did you obtain a PC, and get into CS, and why Jailbreak?

I'll go first.

My half brothers dad would play WOW, CS 1.6 and eventually we all followed his lead. Finding computers on the side of the road being thrown away and we would piece them together to fix them and install 1.6. Play warcraft servers, rp servers, and jb servers.

I used to buy "dedicated server" boxes, add FTP to them with different folders and rent them out to aspiring communities trying to start their own server to make a profit. Used to create websites, graphic designing and etc to earn more money from these communities to slowly upgrade my PC. Learned to create scripts from .lua (started with gta) to even networking to phpmyadmin and mysql to earn even more money. And eventually I just no longer do these things since I make decent money working on air conditioners so I dropped it all. And one day I installed cs again and randomly found ego on the community server list back in like 2016-2018 i think. But I enjoy the community so i stick around to play with everyone. But, I would love to learn YOUR story. Why are YOU here and what keeps you here? Cheers.

I didn't have a computer growing up until probably around 2013, and I would've been 11. I had an older brother who loved technology, and it really rubbed off on me. He got first dibs for the computer since he was older and technically "waited longer," so I would just sit and watch him play CS:GO, Minecraft, and Unturned. We both played other games, those were just the main beginning three that I remember. I still play Minecraft to this day, but CS:GO really hooked me. I've never really been into guns or violence or anything of the sort, so it's funny that CS:GO was the thing that struck my attention. As a kid, I loved video games in general. Before we had a computer, we had a GameCube, PS2, my grandmother had an N64 that we would play on whenever we stayed at her house, the Boys & Girls Club that I went to had a Wii in the rec room that I would play Mariokart and Wii Sports on whenever I got the chance. If there's anything consistent in my life, it would have to be my love and dedication for video games.

Anyway back on the CS:GO track, I would watch my brother play and always nag asking for my turn. I'd see his hand movements and the intricacy that was involved in being good at this game, and it enticed me. Growing up, I was driven by skill and repetitiveness. Above all else, I liked being good at things. Whatever it was, video games, school, yard/playground games, board games like chess, or anything that you could apply a competitive aspect to, I wanted to be the best at. Or at least really good. Once my brother got a job at 16 and bought himself a laptop and he used that primarily, the desktop became mine and I would get on it any chance I got. Every day after school I would boot up my PC and CS:GO would be the first, and usually, the only thing I would launch. Hours and hours I would pour into this game, and I did so because I was good. I found probably the most competitive thing I had available to me at the time, and I was getting really good at it, which just drove me to play it more and more. Not only was I really good at it, but it was also my escape. Just like video games always were for me, but now I have my own system that I don't have to share. There were a lot of unfortunate circumstances and hardships I had to deal with growing up, and the way little me dealt with it was by booting up CS:GO and shitting on people.

The basic competitive mode was all I played, and I wanted something different. Eventually, I stumbled across a "Jailbreak" style server, and I already had a rough idea of what that meant, since I remember playing Minecraft Jailbreak, which is much different now, but back in the day it wasn't. It was the style of jailbreak that I would watch people like CaptianSparklez or SSundee play. So, I hopped on and was immediately hooked. It was the exact thing I was looking for. Something chill that I can just join and have fun with, but that also has a competitive aspect that has to deal with intricate movements and precise inputs. Shortly after I joined this jailbreak server, which I found out later was actually the eGO server, life happened and I had to give up my computer for a while. Once I got another computer and was able to play CS:GO again, it was heaven. I honestly don't fully remember how I rediscovered Jailbreak, I think I might've just had a flash in my memory one day of playing Extreme Climb on Clouds and thought to myself "What the hell was that, and why do I miss it?" And luckily I was able to extract that picture from my mind and find the same jailbreak server I had fallen in love with all those years prior.

At the end of the day, no matter how cliche it sounds, I truly believe my life is much better off because I played CS:GO, and that I discovered jailbreak and eGO within it. I was able to find something that I loved doing, and at the same time was able to use it as an escape and a tool to relax my mind when the real life around me was falling apart.

And lastly, thank you, Nico, for this question. You've allowed me to reminisce about a gruesome period of my life in a wonderful way. CS:GO brought me smiles when they were scarce, and I'll always hold a special place in my heart for it for that reason.

That is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your story and allowing us to see things from your perspective. I believe we all have some type of miserable, heartbreaking, or lack of better words tough time which is why we revert to the gaming community. It gives us a chance to block out reality and substitute our own by playing games. Glad you're here!

I was a console gamer until I was around 12, that's when my dad bought me my first PC. Before this I would go to an internet café with my dad and his friends to play Counter-Strike Source custom maps. We would mainly play a map called 2000$, where we would spend hours pretty much every weekend for a whole summer. This was around the time when CSGO just released, I pretty much got it a couple months after and fell in love since, accumulated over 6k hours on it since then.

How did I find JB or rather this community? I played quite a lot of community servers over the years but never really got invested in them as much as I did with eGO, funnily enough and I know some people will give me shit for this lmao, but I was banned on LoL for 2 weeks due to too many chat restrictions [I was kinda toxic] and decided to hop on some good old CSGO and play on some community servers, this was after like a year break from CS. I found the TTT server first and stuck with that for roughly a year and a half before I even decided to give JB a try and been with the community ever since.

Hell yeah brother an internet cafe? I can only imagine the type of relationship you and your father have. Sounds healthy as hell. Thats an awesome story and thanks for sharing with us. Im super appreciative but I also feel like I am starting to sound like a substance abuse class host congratulating everyones story. But I hated TTT for a while and only because I never understood it. But after understanding it, its actually good.

Showing my age here, I first started playing on the computer in the 90s with Lemmings, Wolfenstein 3d, skifree, and other games on floppy disks. I didn't start playing CS until the mid-2000s at a gaming/internet cafe with my brother. He introduced me to CSS, and I've been hooked since. I don't play JB, but appreciate some of the other game modes. CSS Dust 2 will always be home.

I started as a console gamer and have been playing games since I was a kid. I was a big fan of GoldenEye 007 and even went out of my way to obtain an n64 and a copy of the game. I eventually found videos of something called GoldenEye Source on YouTube, and decided I had to have it. But in order to play that mod, you needed to have (a PC) and a source engine based game. So I went to the store and picked up the Source Multiplayer Pack which had Counter Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source, and Half life 2 deathmatch. After wandering around a few servers I found eGO servers, not only on CSS but on DODS also. I decided to stick around and just loved the servers and community.

My computer savvy cousins tried to get me into some PC games (Wolfenstein, Diablo, Doom) as a young kid, but the games just scared me too much to play on my own. I didn't show an interest until November 2000, when they turned me onto Counter Strike 1.3. I played the entire visit, but was a total noob! Within the next couple months, I read PC Builders magazines and came up with enough cash and knowledge to build my very first "Gaming PC" since the computer I had at home barely functioned. Soon, I upgraded from 56k dialup to DSL! Within a year, I had found a home with a large group of active LE/MIL based out of the south, [C.O.P.S] clan and LA_MERCS (Louisiana Mercenaries). Despite 9/11 and GWOT changing our world, playing this game and listening to the stories those men offered daily helped to mold what character traits and morals I choose to follow today.

September 2002; I injured myself on the first play of my first varsity football game. Out of stubbornness, I showed up for the next 4 days of practice fighting through the pain. Finally the nurse demands to check my injury and tells me I'm done. Upon x-ray, I had cracked my ankle from a tackle, and with the continued physical exertion, had pulverized some of the bones and tendons. I needed 4 pins to keep my ankle together and was on crutches for almost a year. Knowing I could not return to sports or any physical activity for some time, Counter Strike was there to keep me occupied, at least mentally. At what I thought was going to be a low point in my life, the people I found myself spending time with playing an online game made it to be a highlight instead.

June 2003; I convince my father to drive me, my huge CRT monitor, full sized leather chair, and all other items needed, from Michigan down to Louisiana to partake in a huge LAN event that my clan/server was putting on. The event was sponsored; Fry's, Bawls, Hooters (yes, they provided the food everyday over the weekend event and hosted games that were entertaining) and a handful of other companies that were using the event as a way to collect donations for the family of an officer involved in a deadly traffic crash months prior. One of the top prizes was a Radeon 9800 Pro which was top shelf loot at this time. Over 200 people in a VFW hall, with power cords and cables everywhere, it got HOT in there! It was a nice time to put faces to names I had been talking with for a few years and came to know as friends.

As time went on, I became involved in playing more competitively. I played in OGL and CAL leagues. Never making it past CAL-M , mainly due to a poor internet connection and getting disconnected at the absolute worst of times. After a few years, I grew tired of competing and enjoyed playing on public servers more. I played and admined on servers such as "Toronto WTF", "NoobSalad", and "NoobsGalore".

At some point, I stopped playing Counter Strike all together and switched to W.o.W. to play with local friends for several Xpacs. Once that phase was over with, I came back to the game that will forever be my first love. I think I came to play on Ego maybe back in 2016. I said I'd never admin again and I usually just try to play a good game that I'm proud of and keep the chat to a minimum. Here I am today, same account now since Sept 13, 2003. Yes, a VAC ban is on my record from using a scout skin that gave me a red dot even when not scoping. Was legal until one day, then it wasn't! That ban was from 17.5 years ago. Almost as old as some of you are!

Here's a few pictures of that LAN event. I think I was 15 at the time. Notice the laser etched Counter Strike fan cover!

I really appreciate all of your stories and thats awesome how we all somehow managed to have our life path converge. I would love to hear Legend Legend story on how ego started and the hurdles to make it the community it is today. I used to play gta rp with you and never got around asking you these questions. So whats up brother, how did all this happen?
