This is a great series but the first volume is a difficult read. Not for beginners.

Asimov's FOUNDATION and I ROBOT series are great and mind bending

Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

David Brin - UPLIFT SAGA

Peter F Hamilton - Night's Dawn trilogy (F'd up Take on Zombies!)
