What happened to the OW server?

I used to be pretty active in the early parts of the overwatch server, but left it when I stopped playing the game. I came back now and saw a post about the last event of the overwatch discord server. I also see that it isn't under the supported games section. Does anyone know what happened?

The server was eventually closed down due to lack of activity. I blame the developers for a lot of the down tick in players. Hard to hold together a community for a game that people hated playing.
