Since the desktop tends to be a bit more power hungry, it's generally shut down when not in use. When i was in college it ran every hour i was awake though, used to seed our TF2 and DoD:S servers while i was out in class and all. But that's when I wasn't paying the power bill...

Laptop? Never, just sleep mode constantly.

I have a homelab that I have running 24/7, but my personal computer and work computers are turned off every night.

The only time I see my computer fully shutdown is when I have an update or my PC crashes. As a Computer Engineering student, it's usually fine to leave the computer running 24/7 if the temps are okay. The only downside is that bearings can fail much quicker and corrosion can occur much faster.
