hey everyone im just wondering if you need to have half life 2 before you can do garry's mod.

I have garry's mod and I don't have half life 2
wait how do you get it to work then?
I downloaded it off steam, though I paid for mine which is probably why it works as standalone. It's only like 5 dollars or about 3 pounds in good old Sterling.
