Kar98 has greater stopping power due to larger slower rounds and higher kinetic energy. Definetly would do more damage than the smaller faster rounds of an m1. Same basic principal behind any MG compared to a Thompson. MG rounds travel slower, but have more weight and higher transferable energy.
Lesson of the day. Feel free to contest, I did not research the issue further than basic physics and the stats provided.

your right about the rifles, the k98 does shoot a little slower but the 8mm is heavier, check out the ft lbs (foot pounds) figure at the top, basically the more ft lbs a gun puts out is how much energy is transferred to the target.
your wrong about the Thompson and MG though, The MG (30cal) shoots basically the same round as the m1 garand so it goes about 2800 fps, the thompson however shoots .45 ACP rounds which go under 1000 fps (they are subsonic rounds) so it is alot less powerful than the MGs. The MG42 shoots the same round as the k98 (8mm mauser) you can check the stats at the top
