8600 GTS - Not Impressed

EGO Zealot
So, I just purchased and installed a new gig of ram and an eVGA 8600GTS 256mb PCI-E vga. But, my frame rate has had no change. Here's what I had:

- - - - - -
AMD ATHLON 64 3700+ 939PIN
2-512MB PC3200 PC400 DDR (Now 2 Gigs)
ASUS A8N-SLI NF4 SLI PCI-E
420 Watt Power Supply
XMIDIA GF 6800XT 256MB PCI-E (This is my OLD Card)
- - - - - -

I guess my main question is this:

If I did get a 8800 card would I see a significant FPS bump? Will I be able to use that card with my 420 watt power supply? Am I forever limited by my processor?

Please help! I'm gauging whether it's worth it to try a further upgrade or if I should just keep the new gig and replace the 8600GTS.

Any input is going to help me.

Thanks.

Your processor could be straining if you install nVIDIA's new 8000 series and since they are power hogs, I would probably recommend beefing up to at least a 500watt power supply or more to run it. Personally, I fell in love with nVIDIA's 7900 GT or 7950 (if you can afford it) and they're the most stable and reliable cards nVIDIA has to offer, imo.

A friend of mine just installed a new 8800 and he loves it. With the DirectX 10 support, it could be worth a buy but my heart's staying with the 7900 series for the moment.

its probably ur mobo and cpu old chipset probably not 570 or 590 which love 5500 - 8800 series graphics cards
and possibly PSU for not suppling enough power

Well, just to keep everyone updated on my video card quest......I'm sending the 8600GTS back and am thinkin about getting:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143090

Yeah?

Let me know what you guys think.

I spoke with someone and they pretty much told me there's a frame buffer issue with that card since it's the lowest level DX10 made...and I don't need DirectX 10 since this computer won't be going to vista.

The 1gig of ram did wonders to my load time so that's staying in the unit...but the 6800XT needs to be upgraded.

Gimme some input people! 7950GT?

I have the AGP version of that card in a second machine at home. It's not bad. I'd expectt he PCIe version to be a little better.

and another thing..... my biggest problem with Nvidia is how they seem to like to make the model numbers of their chips and cards close enough to be confusing. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH brfore you shell out the cash for a new card... especially a higher end card.

Yup, my hopes were high for the 8600....but they fell flat on their face. I think the 7950 is going to be more manageable if that makes sense. I'm running an AMD 3700 2.2GHZ with 2 gigs of ram.

Hi Shane,

Really? Don't bother with the 7950? The price between the two is close enough where I'd just assume get the 7950 vs the 7600.

Will I see any performance difference?

If you mostly play DoD, I would not recommend a 7900 series Nvidia card. For some reason, Source is a retarded engine and runs better with a 7600 than a 7900 card. I can get you proof of this, but, yeah, I recommend the 7600 too.

I'd believe this. The 7900/7950 is the last of the 7x series of cards. The x50 is Nvidias way of slipping a few new bits of technology onto an old platform to help mainteain a perforamce edge before a new line of card is release. So... ithe 7950 was the last card in the series before the next line of cards came out. They pushed that platform about as far as it could go so... one might assume an occasional technical glitch at this level.

I was very happy with my evga 8800GTS.... that is until my whimpy 450W power supply died. with the proper power supply it looks and performs great, though.

I went with the 7600GT after a few people on separate sites recommended it. Plus the card was only $85....and it's better than my current one.

We will see
