Insurgency Mod Reflections

As many of you know, the HL2 Mod, Insurgency came out last week. Typical of all beta's there's good and bad. I'd say overall it's very good.

Bad? I'm not keen on lack of spawn camping protection. It's also taking me some getting used to not having some kind of aiming point. I like the IS, but not having some kind of aiming point is difficult and I'm sure some have to be putting dots on their monitors, so as it progresses, I think it'll have to come back.

Good? I totally love how you hit what you aim for... This in itself is very big, in my opinion. Couple this with a lack of CoF and the fact that damage is realistic, and I think the Mod has a real chance. Most FPS's now have gun damage muted to the point of almost Final Fantasy levels, where it takes half a clip to bring someone down. It's getting ridiculous, in my opinion. Day of Defeat used to have a strong damage model and I find it unfortunate that they've gone the way of so many other FPS games out there. Playing Insurgency is in some ways similar to the way that Day of Defeat used to be and what took me away from CS. It's a little slower than DoD and movement is at times funkified, but overall it can be an immersive experience and holds a lot of promise.

Besides some bugs, like going crouch, prone, crouch, jump on corners gets u stuck everytime....its alright. I think they have WAY to much bullet drop on the m4. Im shooting across a street, and the aimpoint laser dot was a good 1/2 inch away from the wall I was hiding behind, yet it would keep hitting it.

Yar, once they fix a few of the really annoying bugs, and tighten up the weapon switching, it'll be a really good game.

Agreed. Switching from primary weapon to grenades takes me like 10 seconds.

Good heavens, sometimes I think I grab a nade and i pull out the knife. Not sure which brainiac was in charge of that part of the game, but whatever he was smoking at the time, I dont want it. And heaven help you if you wish to switch back to primary.

The initial release was unplayable on my pc as I would drop to about three frames per second any time I got remotely near combat. With the patch out (1.1) this issue had been resolved for me so I've been able to play it and it is now my favorite FPS, existing glitches besides.

I love the realism they are attempting to infuse into the mod and I hope that if any changes are made it will only be to increase the realism level. We have lots of platforms and mods in which to experience 'gameplay' oriented design but few devoted to realism. Even America's Army has aimpoints, health indicators, ammo indicators, and a map showing friendlies.

It's looking like many people are having a hard time adjusting and I see lots of people resorting to rushing about with the shotgun Quake style or camping at the enemy's spawn (very unsportsmanlike and unrealistic). I think the INS community will sort of split off on its own and become a separate class of gamer with a separate style of play.

So yes, if you like realism and you haven't already done so download the Insurgency mod and give it a try.

I too like the mod, bugs aside it's a quality game and it's free! Movement is slower, camping is more prevalent and often times necessary, the weapons' accuracy is more realistic (ie no straight line shots at great distances, even for scoped weapons), dmg is more realistic. Weapon switching is my major beef with the game. The sights being off at close range make some sense for the real world as far as zeroing the weapon goes, but don't seem to hinder game play too much. The HUD also take some getting used to. Overall, great mod!

Do you need HL2 to play Insurgency? Or is it OK to just have the Valve game pack like me that includes CSS, DODS, and HL2 Deathmatch? I only have this 3 game pack but not the actual HL2 game. Would like to know, cuz if I need HL2, I will buy it for $20, but it would be cool if I didn't.

That's a very good question. I have HL2, so I can't answer it for you, but have you tried reading about it at the web site? Just google ins mod and it should come up.

You have to have the Source SDK base which comes in anygame package aslong as you have any of their games. So yes, you can get it, no you don't have to have HL2.

If you guys play BF2, a good realism mod is Project Reality. Very little bugs, havent had any myself and highly realistic.

you can get it from filefront fastest, but their website is projectreality.com i think or something like that
