Hello, I am wondering what others have to say (who actually know, please no guesses) about pistol brands. Sometime in the future, but not too soon, I will be buying my very first hand gun.

Without starting a fanboy war, can anyone shed some objective light onto some brands? Perhaps, you can start from this - I was thinking about the Sig p226R in 357 (which is availible with 40cal barrel that you can interchange). I have shot Sig 228 and 229's with my boy scout troop some years ago, and also the 226 in 9mm recently. (Sigarms USA headquarters is in Exeter NH, I live 20-30 minutes away)

Recently I have shot a glock, and although I was told I shot better than most my first time, it just didnt feel as comfortable as I would like. The same day I also let off a couple of rounds in an HK (do not know which model) and I thought it felt great. I also enjoyed the p226. I understand that caliber is a choice based upon its intended use, but I was wondering how your luck has been with some brands.

P.S. I found out why dirty harry said the .44 magnum was the most powerful handgun in the world. I shot it when I was 15, and havnt tried it since. My uncle had to catch my arms, its a good story : )

If I could chime in here, any reviews of the HK USP vs comparable glocks and sigs would be great. I'm currently leaning towards the the HKs and would appreciate any input (.40 and .45) . Thanks.

ummmm a hand gun.......you could be like rambo and get that mg..thats one hand...hehehehe

my personal favorite is the Beretta 92, 9mm and you can get an interchangeable barrel for a 40cal. it really depends on your price range. kimber and springfield are really good but they're more expensive.

How about all you people who don't like guns or want to probe the reasons why people have no problems with them start their own thread and leave this one to the original purpose of the op.

....aka Trolling, btw Lex.... AND, I never got an answer back... But if you're looking for a good Self Defense weapon I'd look for a 9mm Glock... or 9mm H&K... For kicks and giggles, by far... my favorite one I've fired is the Taurus Raging Bull .454... Kicks like a mad man... but it's SOOOO fun. :)

I've shot many glocks and HATED each one. I can;t stand the way they eject the shells. Many times shells have bounced off the ceiling of the range position I was at and landed on my head.

I like SIG handguns, but I've only shot 228's.

My personal favorite handgun that I've shot was a Walther P99 .40 S&W. Really accurate and a minimal kick.

i agree with MOP. i cannot stand glocks. for me they are just too uncomfortable and i dont really like the plastic frame. i prefer a metal frame with wood grips.

I almost bought a WW2 Class Luger, but the jerk selling it to me decided to double the price.

I've got beebee guns, but that's it.

Well, I am glad to hear so many people enjoy the Sig's and nobody saying much bad about them - because I have been leaning towards them. But I want to be as unbiased as possible.

As I said, I agree the Glock just isnt for me, it felt awkward when I shot it. Interestingly enough, I found out that the H&K USP that I shot was also plastic, just like the glock - except it felt nice, shot well and was enjoyable.

To anwer your question, I ddint want to discuss the reason for getting the handgun as, it has everything to do with the caliber I get, but nothing to do with the brand. I am not looking for people to reccommend 9mm or .40cal or any other caliber size, just which brands shoot well, they enjoy, and have had good luck with. I want somehting reliable, and It's also kind of nice living 30 minutes away from the National Sig headquarters, and 20 minutes away from the Sigarms Academy. On saturdays they have helicopter's drop off agents for training at the academy. (thats what they told me last time I shot at the academy).

Anyways, I apreciate the comments thus far, but could you give specific reason for your likes, and dislikes? I am hoping to hear from someone who has owned several guns and give reasons for their picks.

AGAIN, please do not contribute to this thread if you have no idea, or to add useless "what he said" posts. I am not looking for which brand gets the most "FTW" spam, but a good discussion. THANKS everyone!

get a 357 magnum with a 2 foot barrel. dirty harry style.

FYI... Dirty Harry's weapon was a 44mag... not a 357
Later he used a 44 auto mag

Indeed, if you can get the money, buy an HK. If you can't, sigs are another pretty good bet, along with a few of the S&W pistols. It really depends on which cal. you want, and what your intended use for it is...I know you left that one a little unspecified, but..you know. Since you don't really care about the cal. too much, I would probably go for an HK (any one..but the tactical is badass >:D ), and I enjoyed the Sig p228, but the recoil on the HK, and the feel of the shots were much more appealing to me.
