Dual vs Single Video card

Hey All,
I've been thinking of upgrading my video card.
Currently i have a 1yr old Dell XPS 700, 4Gb mem,2.4 core duo and a nvida 7900GS 256mb.
The system is SLI so i can add a second matiching card for about $160 or i would go with the Nvidia 8800GTS 320mb based on reviews and price point (about $300)
What do yo guys think? is SLI any good or is it better to stay with one card??

Thanks,

you can go look at benchmarks your not really comparring the same thing here. Do you care about DX 10 or just raw performance? Usually SLI gives a performance increase between 10-20% depending on models and stuff. If you are unhappy with your current card's performance then why not get the 8800gts 640mb or the 8800gtx. If you are not unhappy why ask the question in the first place?

In general SLI never impressed me because for the price of two cards you can get one better one. In your case where you have one decent one, look up some specs. tomshardware.com is a good place to start looking for benchmarks.

I would go for the 8800GTS. Make sure your power supply can support it! SLI is pretty much a waste of money because you get about a 20% increase.

The thing is, its often much more cost efficient and FPS beneficial to just go with a faster higher model video card than it is to go with 2 slower ones.

Video cards and the market changes so fast, buying 2 for sli seems like a waste no matter what cards they are. Ive always been perfectly happy with one.

I still urge you to get the 640MB gts otherwise get the gtx. Why waste the money only to find out that your card is awsome but it doesn thave enough vram to run at 100%

320mb 8800 gts will do just fine
i have a fx5500 on an old comp plays source pretty well still
and 7900s ftw run the game great with no hold ups

Greenmonkey; I am REALLY tempted to get the 640mb version.... keeping an eye out for a super deal. Right now it looks like about $100 diff between the 320mb-640mb
It is always better to have more then you need so you have room to grow.

personally i wud wait for the gforce 8900 and get one of them, i am currently on a gforce 7900 gs like yourself with 512 vram (not that it matter much) and wouldnt really consider upgrading until the the next series of card (personal opinion though)
