FF3 (ff6 in Japan) is my favorite. FF7 is a close runner-up though.
arg...FF..I played FF7...and after that i lost interest
I have never played before Final Fantasy VII and i think beyond that i think they are all good

still love 7, the others were nicer looking or had better battle styles or whatever, but 7 was still the best overall
I think the answers to this question are going to vary a lot with age. Younger gamers will probably lean toward the newer, 3D FF's, like FF7. Older gamers like myself may point toward FF2 or FF3 (US).
I personally enjoy FF3 the most. Though much of the game mechanics, style and graphics were setup by FF2, it was FF3 that really came out with the things that we've come to expect from FF games - like in-depth plot and superb character development. I feel like FF3 was the most non-linear of the games. By that, I mean that you had a great deal of freedom as far as where you can go and in what order you want to do things. I felt like the later FF games, especially FF7, were too confined; I felt like my hand was being held throughout the game and that I was being guided in one specific direction.
I enjoyed Tactics a great deal as well. Chrono Trigger too.

I've played all of the FF's, minus the online version and X2 but including Tactics and I have to say I like FFVII the best. It had the best story, and everything in it was pretty new aside from traditional rpg's in the form of how the battle system worked and the addition of summons. VIII I also enjoyed quite well especially the card mini game. X was good and unfortunately I haven't finished XII because I got an XBOX 360 and had to put away the ps2. (Don't have one of those multi system selectors yet). I also loved the FF Movie and Advent Children was just sick.

I probably would've loved VIII a hell of a lot more if it wasn't for that card game. Don't get me wrong I loved the card game but it kept me from beating the game. =-P

i love the card game. I spent a crap load of hours on it, but i did beat the game like a year later after i collected all the cards.and oh yeah poor squall, and his chick was cute lol. And Zell was a little crazy
