http://halflife2.filefront.com/info/dodsfpsguide_expand#721461

trying to get some better fps' but it just made the guys all shiny
i tried uninstalling and deleting the day of defeat source file but they're still shiny :/

Either set "mat_bumpmap" back to 1 or change "mat_specular" to 0. The former will look better, the latter will perform better.

well, if its a skin, than go and delete you materials and models folder in your DoD folder, I know it sounds weird, but believe me, it works, when you start up the game, it rebuilds the folders for you...starts fresh

i tried what yoohoo said to do last night and it worked
i think it was the mat_specular 0 that did it, mat_bumpmap 1 didnt do anything for me

Hmm... both should have worked.

The problem that you had was that the character models were still set to reflect light (for example on their helmets or to give their pockets an appearance of being bumpy) because of 'mat_specular 1' but the game didn't know what parts were supposed to be flat and what was supposed to be rough and non-reflective (because mat_bumpmap was 0). So the game just assumed they were completely smooth pieces of glass, basically.

This is very similar to the "lambert -1.0001" console command in pre-source Counter-Strike. The resulting change would make players appear abnormally bright, making them easy targets in particularly dark areas.
