Why mop almost went to jail....

Obey your master
...I don't know why all my subjects have been in the 3rd person latley.... lol....

ANYWAY

I was playing a sit in gig in a small town south of Austin. Got 50 bucks, gas money, free beer and food so it was well worth the trip. About halfway through the set this drunk is leaning over a railing that was to my left at the edge of the stage. In the middle of me playing he leans over and grabs my shoulder to tell me something. When he was leaning over the railing he forgot that he was holding a beer in his right hand. As he grabbed my shoulder with his left hand his right hand tipped over and poured his beer out......ALL OVER MY $800 FENDER AERODYNE BASS. I LOST it. I'm not going to say exactly what happened because.... well, lets just say if I used this kind of language on the servers I'd be banned. We stopped the song and were about ready to beat this guy. The guy was real apologetic about it though which is great because if he hadn't been I probably would have ended up in jail. The guy gave me his number (I can semi read it) and said that if there's any damage he'll pay for it.

Thankfully, being the OCD musician that I am, I had my P-Bass as a backup and the set was saved.

I can tell you a few close runs I have had with the law...or ummm ehh nvm:D good thing you kept ur cool as best u can MOP

im so very proud of you not using ANY cuss words...

...this wasn't near as interesting as I was hoping it would be. I wanted some of that signature action with fists flying and people dying (getting knocked the bleep out would work too.)

...oh well.

Was it a squire P Bass?

I used to have one of those, moved onto an Ibanez GSR 190 and gave my old P Bass away.

Haha! I've never really been a fan of fender basses to be honest, but then again the only one I've ever had was the squire P-Bass. I love my Ibanez though, it's all red and purdy.

I'd phone the guy up and take him up on his offer asap before he forgets or changes his mind. There are enough witnesses around and you can mention that aspect. The luthier will probably lift out the electronics, inspect the body cavity... then check the pickups switch, etc. for damage and corrosion/rust. You don't want any type of direct moisture there.

If there is, see if you can get the luthier to pop in some Seymour Duncan or DiMarzio pickups :) Same price as Fender, but far better (I'd go with diMarzio's myself).

It's true that bars can be really iffy, but it's only happened to me twice since 1968, and those were very minor and handled by the bar staff.

When you're on stage, you've got to make sure you never ever lose it with the audience. It will blackball the band. Just deal with it the best you can.

Drunks are a fact of life....that's one reason the band I'm in doesn't do bars. Four out of five of us are in our mid 40's+. We've all been there, done that when we were younger, in terms of bars (including carrying baseball bats in our bags, just in case and to make sure we got paid).

We no longer have a whole lot of patience and would probably beat on the guy(s), so bars are off our list. Besides, they don't pay well..

There is far more money in corporate, private and wedding gigs. We did five weddings this summer at $2,500 - 3,500 a shot, plus have a few Christmas gigs and one for New Years still to go.

I don't think it's messed up at all. I plugged her up this morning and everything seems fine. Both pickups and all 3 pots work fine. I took red's advice and left the guy a voicemail this morning saying that I'm going to take the bass to a local guitar shop tomorrow morning to let them do a full check on it. Their luthier and their electronics guy a trusted friends of mine.

If anything is jacked up I got my eyes on a nice set of SD vintage J-bass pickups =)
