For those that don't know, I work for an electrical contractor and I head up the Data, Security and Communications division. I've been developing a nice little web based interface to view commercial IP/Network cameras from anywhere in the world.
If you'd like to see what I've come up with go to www.capricam.com/index2.cfm
Don't worry about the login part of it, it's not working yet.
Select a camera and accept the camera software download to view/control the images.
Okay...on to the story.
I was checking out some stuff on Google and saw that Nasa has a network camera at a weather station. This gave me and one of my co-workers an unbelievably stupid idea that we're going to actually attempt this weekend.
We're going to launch one of our IP cameras 250' up into the air via several helium inflated ballons. The max range for Cat5e cable is 300', so we'll drop it down a bit. The whole thing will be broadcasted via the internet and whether it is successful, or a complete disaster (resulting in my thousand dollar camera plummeting 250' to its demise) it should be fun to watch!
So, Friday I will post the IP address of the camera that I will be using this Saturday at 9 am. Chances are this will last a few hours because we need to build a bracket, and test the launch a couple different ways so that I don't destroy my 1000 dollar camera.
Hope you see us there!
I know the burning question is....why?!?! Well 2 reasons:
1. Nasa don't have shit on us.
2. I'm a complete nerd. This rates up there with building computers out of Nintendos and making phones out of Donky Kong drums.
I dedicate this launch to the abysmal Miami Dolphins. There's hope for us all!
