Getting Lost on New Hampshire Mountains!

Well i figured to post my first life experiance of being lost on a mountain, and having Search and Rescue out looking for me! So heres the story: I started Hiking at 4:00 P.M. and was following the traiheads ( Were diffrent trails meet) and they tell you how far to the next traihead, and then from that trailhead it tells you whatever path you want and so many miles to the next trail, (But i thought a trailhead ment how many miles all together) But they dont mean that, so anyways the trail i was taking was called High Ridge Trail to the highest mountains, And right now in the North east of USA it gets dark earlie like around 5:30 - 6:00 P.M. So it took me 2 hours of brisk Hiking up the trails, and i thought it was only going to be 2 miles to the top, Turns out is was a little over 8 miles just to the top! So i made it to the top At 6:00 P.M. ( man at this point i was tired and thought that must have been a very long 2 miles) so there was little light up on top of the mountain cause the sun had almost gone below the horizon, So i ran down hill for around 30 minutes, than it was so getting dark but especially cause now i was in past the tree line, O and by the way all i had with me in my bag was another sweater, bottle of water just about empty, and my cell phone, a small pocket knife. So now its about 6:35 P.M. So i called the place that maintained the trails, tol let them know i was up there and visibility was very poor since fog was settling in, so they called everyone that neede to be notified, and so i ended making it down about half way of the mountain, then i stopped cause the further i went down i lost reception on my cell, and i was at a trailhead, and very very sore, and visibility was maye not even half a foot i could see ahead of me, But come to find out they didnt know of the trailhead i was at, they had about 4 diffrent locations i could be, (the reason why they have the major traisl all on a map, But theres so many other trails they dont have on the map that are there) So anyway i stopped around 8:00 P.M. and i waited there for a good hour and a half, if not two hours, but they found me!!!! They were using four wheelers, and it was at the bottom of the mountain about 43 degrees F , so on the mountain it was probally around 30 degrees F if not colder they said, but i was pretty cold i was shivering heavily tho. So i got down and talked to the guys that maintain the trails, They said i was lucky to get lost tonight cause they normally wouldnt be there past 5:00 P.M. but they were cause someone was having a wedding reception at there building below, so i got to get to sit beside the fire to warm up, and got a free plate of the best food ever,(keep in mind i didnt even eat dinner before i went hiking so i was starving) and that was around 10:30 P.M. that i got off the mountain by the time i left and ate, and then i drove an hour and 15 minutes home. But i just figured to share it with every body cause normally i cant think waht to post on the forums.

man i loke hiking and this kind of stuff just annoys me lol why woudl you not get out a map and plan where u were goin?

Did you have matches and that stuff with you. I hunt in the mountains all the time and it easy to get turned around. Always bring matches and a compass or better yet a GPS unit.

Glad you made it out !

Green Monkey I live in Maine.,
50 centricher i was lost last week.
scorpion knight no i didnt have matches or a map or compass with me.
Jimbo cause you can only get the map at there store, but the time i went they were closed.

every time I go out hunting or hiking someplace new my survival pack comes with me. Extra ammunition, flare gun (red & green), chemical light sticks, a few MRE's, iodine tablets, small first aid kit, magnesium fire starter, matches, heat reflective survival blanket, and some cotton balls or sawdust in a little altoids tin that I can use to start a fire. BTW, did you know that you can use a cartridge from a firearm to start a fire? Pull the bullet out, pour half the gun powder on the tinder you want to light, then shove a chunk of t-shirt or any cotton clothing into the half empty round, chamber it, fire it into the ground, and drop it on the tinder....poof, you have a fire. So much easier than using a damn striker and flint.

well i would suggest that if you dont have a map in future not to go :p im sure u lernt that one anyways lol

ok fine - where in Maine do you live? I'm going to the University of Maine. :p
