so as i said in my post herehttp://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96900

im backign up all my guitar recordings, and recording files onto a portible hard drive because i belive there is a virus filling up my computer. just last night i free'ed up my hard drive so i would have 27 gigs left. i find today there is only 10. within an hour im down to 7, and within the next hour i have 1 gig. most likely i will have to format my hard drive, but i am backing up MY important files.

aka gamefiles that have all my skins. my guitar studio sets of recording software, digital amps and efects, and guitar pro.

so i cannot play games at the moment, and i will not be on ventrilo till i have this problem solved.

stupid viruses >_<

so that's a low down on what happened. i deleted a game yesterday when my computer decided to go to 798MB, and that gave me 3.79 gigs. then my computer went to 3.29 gigs today, and when i get home from tea kwon do and check on my memory left, im at 20.6 gigs?

I AM COMPLETELY BAFFLED BY THIS!!!!!!

any one know what in the devils name is going on??? HAS SATAN TAKEN OVER MY COMPUTER????????????(no not djsatan, im talkin' about the devil here)

but in all seriousness, i have not formated yet, and i believe i have a chance to save my computer

Check to see if system restore is enabled. If it is keeping lots of old restore points, you can turn it off to clear up large amounts of storage.

As well, if you have vista, disable any processes like disk defragmenter and such. They might be using the hard drive as temp storage.

You may wish to use disk cleanup to remove deleted files and temporary files, as well as compress old files for more storage.

Finally, check how much virtual memory the computer is using. If it is doing something demanding, it might grab up more hard drive space to process.

If it actually is a virus, these won't fix it, but it should buy you some time to get the stuff you care about backed up.

There are many different things that build up on your computer and take up space over time, it's normal. Only way to fix this is to uninstall a lot more space or buy another HD, or just a external HD.

Don't know of a virus that takes away your gigabytes.

i do have vista :P. i havent. my system restore is check pointed, so it should copy over its old one. my computer runs the disk defragmenter at 3:00 am central every couple of weeks or so.

ive ran disk cleanup, but that only free'ed up a couple mega byte

and i do not know how to check how much virtual memory is being used, but my physical memory is a 56% with 83 to 81 processes

Do you have updated anti-virus software and which one?

Is it working?

What happens when you run a full scan?

The term Virtual Memory is a throwback to older versions of Windows and DOS. Nowdays this is generally referred to as Page File or Paged Memory. Windows architecture, unless tweaked, usually attempts to use page file memory first before utilizing the physical memory (RAM) unless you tweak it.

Microsoft updates are probably taking the space. You should really get a better hard drive though. Hd's are so cheap now a days you can get a terabye to $90.
