Depends on which game your playing ? Tetris? That's fine 
Also depends on the rest of your computer setup.
I can't run any games maxed out inless its pretty old, but then again maxed is Very high, full AA, phsyx on high etc etc.

lolz Phsyx only runs on nVidia cards silly
in css with the 7200 GS : maybe 30 on low/med
maybe 17-20 on med/high
same for DoD
COD: -5 FPS (on low)
TF2: 0 fps (on low)
If you are limited to low-end cards then go with the 8400GS you might be able to play TF2
If its just $ get the 9600GT it will be able to play all of those games at a decent 40FPS

i have a nvidia 9600 gso and i get 300 fps on css
300 with a 9600gso? what uhh other specs you got over clocked it much?
My 8800GT gets a steady 100FPS on TF2 max settings, CSS i get about 50-100 depending on if its a regular server or a modifyed like zombie mod etc. Other games like X3:Reunion or Terran conflict i get about 30-50 FPS. I would htink with todays games a 7200 would play oh about nothing, inless you wanted to play some C&C red alert. That would definitly run that, old school i see how you are.

My 7600 GT can pump out 80 FPS on medium on TF2 when there's not much going on. But Source games kill the processor more than the video card, to a 5:2 ratio (roughly). Since my processor is bad, I get extremely poor FPS (12 during intense action, and irregular skipping). A 7200 probably won't get you any more than 20 during an actual game, given you have a similar processor to mine.
At 640x480 resolution I'm sure!
A friend of mine has a 9600gso and he runs tf2 at more than playable framerates, but not 300.

On average, CS:S gets much higher FPS than TF2 because TF2 uses a newer engine, and has a whole lot more particles and crap that the CPU and GPU has to keep up with. So 300 FPS in CS:S but 120 in TF2 wouldn't be too radical.

I love the people who try to get 300 fps when the human eye can't even detect close to that amount
so lets all go out and buy 600 dollar video cards!
again, my 8600 GT was 40 bucks after mail in rebate and in CSS everything max res 100-500 fps. i'd have to say it is very processor heavy especially with the console commands:
r_3dnow 1
r_mmx 1
r_sse 1
r_sse2 1
which transfers load from GPU to CPU to boost performance (if you have a better CPU than GPU).
no doubt a 9600 gso blows CSS out of the water with the right processor

true, but no one knows what the "fps" of the human eye is.
what:cursing:, i have a better card than this and i dont get that much unless on lowest setting??
CPU bottleneck
most people say you won't notice a difference of anything above 30 FPS, but if i go below 50 FPS i can notice it glitchy/slowdown...how bout you guys

i notice the difference between 30 and 60. but those are both playable. hell i played Crysis with like 20ish frames. barely playable

No I can turn Phsyx on and its installed.
I got a nvidia mobo though so...
the jump from 90 FPS to 60 FPS can be noticed and It depends on your monitor.

most people wont notice a deference above 60fps.
