Today on Blackmesa, we were discussing some stuff and somebody brought up how soldiering was an art as opposed to demo. I just wanted to know whether you guys believed that being a good soldier is really an art.

being good at any class is in art form.......except for pyro

*runs*

Soldier is more about timing the rockets and anticipating the player movement.

Demo is more about knowing the map and how to take out sentries without ubers by playing the right angles.

Playing angles and timing are both an art. Both get better with practice. I would say that the anticipation required of a soldier makes it a bit more of an art though, as once you "figure out" the angles of a given map, they stay pretty consistent over the course of time.

That being said, they are both more of an art than most other classes. Spy probably being the biggest exception.

The soldier requires time to understand the enemy's movement, how to aim his rocket so that he loses the least amount of damage possible. He also has to know how to utilize the 4 rockets he has.

playing any class well is an art, but I would argue the opposite. Playing demo well is more of an art than soldier. Yes knowing the map will help you as demo, it'll do the same as soldier. However, because pipes don't travel in straight lines you need to be more accurate and aware of range and surroundings than as soldier.

but then again none of them is more of an art than scout :P

Soldier is the most difficult class to master in TF2. Unlike the spy or demo, the soldier benefits very little from binds, scripts or aliases. The soldier relies more on breaking fire than any class in the game, even more than the HWG. The soldier has a weaker attack than both the heavy and the demo, and is also slower than all but the heavy.

Anyone can play soldier with proficiency, but few possess the ability to become dominant soldiers. So yes, I would say being a good soldier is an "art."

Edit: Btw I'm approaching 300 hrs as soldier. Still less than sniper though :P

Couldn't agree more, QB. I've logged close to 96 hours of playtime as a soldier and it's my strongest class out of all of them. Soldiers have to rely on precise aiming of their rockets, and how to utilize the 4 rockets they carry at a time. Also it helps to know who you are running around with, aka know yer medic. A good soldier + a good medic combo who can rely on each other + kritzkrieg = Major Carnage.

+1

Yes, a good soldier can take out 5-6 people... if he knows how to use his rockets, and where to aim. and how to jump

Here are some of my soldier playing stats on BM.

1st is WITHOUT a medic. 2nd is WITH a medic, my trusty Utoma[af]

When was the first one from, just so I know what class I was playing. I won't play that if you are on BM.

I'd say playing as any class and excelling is an art form. Some people suck as certain classes, handle some decently enough, and excel at a few. An expert Scout is just as devastating to a team as an expert Soldier, Demoman, Spy, Medic, etc...

Very true. My two strongest classes are Soldier and Pyro, and my weakest class by far is Sniper. I cannot grasp sniping in this game for the life of me. :(

If you can figure out where someone will be, you can shoot them. It's the reason scouts are so hard to shoot...the whole being able to turn around in the air thing makes them tough to shoot. You need to learn to predict player movement then be one step ahead of them with your scope...two steps when dealing with scouts.

I would have more respect for scouts if the FAN was gone, and more for spies if the damage reduction was eliminated from the DR.

It's funny that you say that, Nero, because I'm decent like that for rocket placements as a soldier. It seems my problem is that when I snipe, I always seem to -just- miss the target by inches.

It could also be the map that I play. 2Fort Instant has some ridiculously good snipers on it, I'm no match for them.

I'm not a very good shot with the rocket launcher, but I'm a pretty good shot with the rifle. They're pretty different weapons.

Map knowledge is also a big factor that I neglected in my other post. I play sniper on maps that I know too well. I mostly snipe on blackmesa because I've been playing on it for a hell of a long time.

Yeah, when I play soldier an I am having a good day, I can rack up a 100 kills easy. I might die alot at the beginning, but once I get going, I can get around 3-4 kills in one life. Most of what I do then is just think and try to predict my enemies next move. And I agree that every class is an art when somebody is really good with it. But I have no respect for vent camping demos though.

Soldier does have a sort of inertia. Even good soldiers get going slowly, but once they get going they are hard to stop.
