Connecting to Xbox Live through a PC.

What's up eGO. I've got a question about connecting to xbox live through a computer.

I want to connect to Xbox Live through my PC (Vista) but my PC is also wired to a router which is a good ways away from where I am now. I was wondering if it is possible to "share" connection to the router through the PC?

I was thinking of either buying a Ethernet Cable Splitter or just Buying a 50ft CAT5 Ethernet cable and running it downstairs to my router like I am doing right now for my PC.

If anyone can help, that would be great.

EDIT: Right now I would just take the cable out of my PC and put it into my 360 for internet connection but I would like connection to the internet to my PC & 360 at the same time.

There are things called ethernet switches that you can buy. You plug your available line into 1 port of the switch, and a cable for each your xbox and your computer. That should be all the setup required for a switch.


This is a $10 refurbished smart switch from our very own sponsor, D-Link. I think you will need a "smart" switch for your xbox to work through it, so I would go with something like this.

You could probably find a 50ft cat5 from a local computer store for around $5-$10. Don't go to a large computer store (i.e. Futureshop) for something like that. They'll charge you something ridiculous. (Although that is CAT6)

Personally I would go with the switch so you don't have to run another cable to your basement.

In short, what you're trying to do is possible.

All you need to do is enable ICS (internet connection sharing) on the card/adapter that is currently using the internet connection. It will then ask you which adapter you'd like to share it with.

If you have a laptop, you can also play with the configuration settings of your connection, and make it shared to have it connect from your laptop.

Alright so I got the switch and now I still can't connect to Live. I'm on the internet fine using the switch but no Live. I tried to manually put the info in on my 360 also but no luck. This is how my set up is:

Port 1: Router
Port 2: PC
Port 4: Xbox

It's giving me a "can't obtain an IP address" message on my xbox.

Make sure your NAT is open on the router. I had the same problem.
